Ask I.S.N: How Do AT&T Plans Compare to Sprint Palm Pre Plans?

Ask Inside.Sprint.Now!

First, let me say that over the past couple of months I've had around 30 visitors a day to my blog - So you'll have to bear with me while I try to process this crazy influx of madness over what I thought was going to be some general FAQ about the Pre. Turns out over 8,600 of you visited here yesterday (!really? it was just some general info.. nothing earth shattering!) so I hope you'll understand when it takes me just a bit to respond to comments and the like. There was one comment that I started replying to, but the answer got to be too long to be an effective comment, and I was afraid it'd be overlooked, so I created a post just for it. I've called it 'Ask I.S.N(Inside.Sprint.Now) and if anyone wants to email me a question or two that might be something that's beneficial to a lot of folks, I might do one every day or two, that all depends on how much time I have. Here's the one comment I picked that I felt could use some clarification.. and I have not told the poster I was making it into a full post, so hopefully he won't mind!

Mike asks: (link to his comment)

What about a family plan where one spouse (me) wants a Palm Pre and a data plan and the other spouse (my wife) does not want to pay extra for a data plan? AT&T offers the ability to pay a flat $30/mth on our existing shared (non-data) plan for a data plan for one spouse which results in a combined monthly cost of $99 ($69 for shared plan + $30 for single line’s data plan). I don’t see anything like this in your post. Will Sprint have something like this for those of us wanting just one Palm Pre on a shared plan?

Mike, I'm glad you asked!

Based on your pricing, I'll assume you have the 700 Minute Shared Plan for $69.99/mo with AT&T which includes:

  • 700 Anytime Minutes

  • Nights & Weekends 9PM-6AM

You stated you could add a data package to one line for $30, leaving the other as is, with only voice usage. That gives you minutes and data for $99.99 – Let’s compare apples to apples though – the AT&T plan is very barebones, and requires buy-ups in order to even compare to a Sprint plan for the Pre, here’s what you’ve have to add:

$16.99 for N/W at 7PM(REALLY?), $9.99/mo for Navigation(per/ln), $1.99/mo for standard voicemail features(per/ln), $30/mo for unlimited messaging(per/acct), $15/mo for Mobile TV Basic(per/ln) – and after all that you still only have data on 1 line! It’d be yet another $30 to add on to the second(assuming PDA too), right?

That’s $230.94/month for 700 minutes, N&W 7PM, Navigation, Enhanced Voicemail, Unlimited Text & Data, and Mobile TV Basic. Even if you left some of these features off (that are included with Sprint) you’d still not come close to the same value, in my opinion (albeit a bit skewed).

How’s that compare to Sprint? As you know we make it easy. It’s SO easy, in fact – Everything’s included! It’s just there! It just works! No worries about using some cool feature of your new phone b/c you might get a $62,000 bill next month cause you were watching more than your allotted 42 seconds of bloopersTV for the month(or whatever your vice may be) Here’s a few options:

(#1) – Everything Data Share 1500

  • 1500 Min/Shared, Unlimited Data & Messaging (Text, Picture, & Video)

  • N&W 7P-7A, Complete Voicemail, GPS/Navigation, TV Premier, Mobile Email

  • $129.99 (includes both lines)(or less with employer/credit union discount)

For (#1) above, you’ve more than doubled your minutes, gave both phones access to everything they were built to do, and tons more features than with AT&T.

So, maybe you say the wife just does NOT use the internet, and has no need for it? Absolutely no messages either?  We could even do something like this:

(#2) – Everything Data 450(you) / Talk 450(her)

  • You on a Everything Data 450 Plan, including all the same features of the data plan above, only change is 450 minutes. $69.99

  • Her on a Talk 450 Plan, includes unlimited mobile to mobile, N&W 7P-7A, LD/No Roaming. $39.99

This (#2) would give you each a plan totaling 200 more minutes than you had before, gives your nights and weekends at 7PM, AND you get messaging with your data, and the total is still only $109.98 (before any discounts, which you can get 10% just for telling us you bank at a credit union).

So I guess my question to you, is how can you afford to stay with AT&T  knowing how much more you’d get here, for so much less? Even if you just did the 69.99/plan +$30 Data(1 line)+$30 Messaging(shared) - you're still paying more and getting less, and your night&weekend minutes would not start until 9PM(-6AM) !

In all seriousness, if I’m missing something in the math here, or there are just features that you absolutely don’t use (like TV) then let me know and we can take a look, but when you compare apples to apples, we beat AT&T in every way that I’ve worked it.

  1. I love this blog. I have it bookmarked now. Now to my question. Will there be any type of upgrade program for existing customers who do not qualify for a new upgrade (ex. end of 1yr or 2yr contract)? I became a Sprint customer again in January because the amazing value of the Everything Data Family plans. Thanks.

  2. Thanks for posting on Mike's comment. This is definitely true that the Sprint plans outdo the competitor plans. But what about us customers who have existing Sprint plans that fit our needs? Here is what I have:

    $40 - 500 free and clear minutes
    $5 - nights and weekends at 7
    $20 - add a phone (my wife's line)
    $8 - unlimited SMS
    $5 - unlimited vision pack

$78 for 500 minutes, unlimited data and messaging on MY line, and only shared minutes for the second line. That's all I need. period. Now the cheapest way to get the closest to this with the new plans is:

$69.99 - everything data for one line
    $39.99 - talk 450

$110 - that's a huge increase from my existing cost, just to use a phone in the SAME WAY I DO NOW!! This is why I am totally frustrated with this requirement, and out of principal may look at moving to another carrier. Where's the reward for my 10 years of customer loyalty? Sprint Premier does nothing for me in this regard.

  3. Gaber - that's a great plan you have and I am sure Sprint will let you keep it with whatever phones you have now. Might stink to have to make a change for a phone you would like, but before you get too ticked and move to another carrier, check out the prices. I have 10 years of loyalty too but don't come close to your plan (I pay $120/mo for 3 lines and one data plan). I can get mad and leave as I lose my discounts (and I have actually thought about doing) but once I put a calculator to it, the extra $40-50/mo at ATT or VZW for the same plan made no sense to me. You can always go Cricket or Boost. Good luck with your principals.....

  4. Will this work? I just want to be able to add a vision plan for $15 or $20 is need be.

  6. What's your feel of pre vs iphone if you ever tried one? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  7. Can you provide info on how Memos from my existing Palm can be transfered to the Pre and if the can still be secured with a password? Thank you as well for providing considerable info on the Pre as well a Sprint. I'm a long time Sprint customer and just can't believe some of the rates that other people pay for lesser service. Sprint has always served me well and I'm proud to be a customer.

  8. Can you confirm if you select the SEP Family Data 1500 Min plan if you can still add codes for unlimited incoming minutes or pick 3?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Kathy, from what I read, you'll be able to not only transfer your contacts but also your memos, to do list.
As for password protection, I don't see why they couldn't have this feature, since it's been present from the early days of Palm OS.

  10. I forgot to add on my earlier reply, thanks for putting up this blog, tons of great info -specially for those Pre-obsessed, like me, who need their daily (hourly?) Pre-related news/rumors.

Question: is there any truth to the rumor that you'll need to go to a store to activate the Pre? Hope you can answer that.

    ReplyDelete
  11. That would be the first I've heard of it - that would just be silly when we've invested so much in Self-Service Options that are not only quicker but more accurate and cost effective - though with the whole setting up a palm profile.... I'll deem is plausible, but it would be the first I've heard of it. In fact, the answer is no... and that's because you'd be charged upgrade/activation if that were the case, and I don't see us abandoning our webfront for that lol

    ReplyDelete
  12. Pre, hands down, and I have had my hands on both.

  13. Insidesprintnow -

Since you are in customer care, are there no discussions around how to treat existing customers with grandfathered plans? Is Sprint really considering letting us leave? I don't understand why there can't be any options for us other than to make us pay a lot more just to use a new phone. I agree with the fact that Sprint plans are generally cheaper than the other carriers' equivalents, but that should not be the bar against which you compare when dealing with existing Sprint customers. I just feel left out in the cold since I have defended Sprint to friends, family, etc. throughout my years as a customer, and even gotten many of them to switch because of the great pricing of plans. Again, I am willing to spend a bit more to get the Pre and use the same services I am using now, but this wouldn't be more than "a bit".

  14. You mention 'complete voicemail' in your description. Does this mean visual voicemail or just standard vm?

Like others have mentioned, any further incentive for current customers who want to upgrade? Is there a special carrot to get us SERO users to upgrade? (Stackable discounts - ie. employee and loyalty?) Can loyalty discounts be combined with the EPRP (new SERO)?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I was in an online chat session with a Sprint rep today and mentioned that I currently had a $80 family share 700 plan but was interested in the Palm Pre.

Was told by the rep that I only had to add the $30 data plan to my phone and i would be covered.

Obviously this is one rep and before the official Pre unveiling, but it seems very odd that Sprint is not doing anything to stem the rumor mill and / or keep existing customers (who are near the end of their existing contract and have no qualms about switching to an iPhone!!) happy.

Why the confusion between what I read on this blog and what the sales rep was telling me (though I know sales reps will say the sky is green to make a sale!! =D ).

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm in the same boat as many. I'd LOVE to have the Pre, but currently I'm sittin at $80 including taxes for 4 lines, 550 minutes, 6PM N&W, Blackberry plan on 1 line, 1000 txt on another, 500 on a 3rd line, pick 3 for all the lines. I'd be looking at spending an extra $50 or so just to pick up the Palm Pre. The other lines dont need data.

I see Palm/Sprint losing a lot of market share if the plans posted are the only ones available. Personally, I'm not going to switch my complete plan just to get a Pre....not at a $50 monthly premium.

    ReplyDelete
  17. To my knowledge, there won't be any additional offers other than the ones you would normally qualify for. Keep in mind that if you're a Premier customer, or a White Glove customer, that you can essentially get new device pricing, even after only 12 months since your last equipment discount - notice I didn't mention contract or anything, as rebate eligibility is only reset during an equipment discount event!

    ReplyDelete
  18. The most obvious change is in the "using your phone in the same way you do now".. as I PROMISE you the Pre uses more data for phone functions than any other phone we offer.. and obviously the $5/data addon doesn't near cover our cost on the data transfer, hence the need to get on a newer plan. Yes, I know it sucks for some folks, but that's life - it happens, you roll with it or you don't, and quite frankly most folks will roll with it and be happy. Your Electric bill might have jumped 20-30% this year, and I'll bet you didn't even call and complain on that one, right ? Not to mention it's a choice :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, those features can be added if the situation warrants it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Tell me what you have, I'm sure there's a comparable option when you consider the data usage etc...

    ReplyDelete
  21. There has been no training yet on the Pre for customer care reps out on the floors of our call centers, ecare included - anything you hear from them at this point is still speculation or hearsay or just making something up to lower their handle time ^-^.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Shoot me an email (or reply if you don't mind it being public) of what you're paying for your plan/features - I think you'll find the comparison shockingly good

    ReplyDelete
  23. Just like others, I'm a long-time Sprint customer with an old plan that's been brought up to current with PowerPack Ultimate (for my main line's Centro; other line has plain good ol' Vision). Since I already have that + unlimited text, why in the world would I "upgrade" to a plan that offers less for much, much more? Just did some quick math and the difference between what I have and closest plan (EDS1500) is $30 + taxes & fees.

One of the reasons I still have my old plan is because for the longest time I never bothered to renew my contract since I feared that something would get messed. And it did after I renewed 1.5 years ago and added PPU. Took me four months to get things back to normal.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks for responding insidesprintnow. However, I DO use quite a bit of data. I stream podcasts daily, and am checking email and web a lot too. I don't see how it would be THAT much more with the Pre. If you look at the plan I outlined, can you see any way of coming within $15 of my current cost?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Business Essentials Msg&Data for 400 Min - $69.99 (1 line) and $25 for the voice only add-a-phone (as it doesn't want data/msg'ing) = 94.99 and it's no biggie to keep your n/w @ 7 for $0 - add your NVP discount (generally a 25% is easy to grab) and you could drop that to 71.25/mo

    ReplyDelete
  26. insidesprintnow - that is awesome! You just solved my dilemma. Full Pre ahead! Seriously though, what is NVP? THANK YOU!

    ReplyDelete
  27. NVP - Employer Discount. Even if you don't have one, you can say you're with a credit union and get 10% :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Okay, I.S.N., how would you transition this plan to a Pre-compatible one (for the main line):

    * Sprint Free & Clear Plan
    * $85 Sprint Free & Clear Plan
    * 2000 Anytime Minutes
    * Unlimited Sprint to Sprint Calling
    * Casual Sprint Data Usage [FREE; on both lines]
    * Sprint Data Ult Pack [25.00; on main line]
    * Unlimited MB of Data [FREE; on second line]
    * America Roaming [FREE; on both lines]
    * Unlimited Text Messaging [FREE; on both lines]

Including Airave service ($4.99/mo minus $4.99 credit), after 18% corporate discount, 15% loyalty ("access" ) discount, and $15 monthly discount (to bring Ult Pack to $10/mo), I pay about $74/mo. with all the fees & taxes.

  29. ISN, what about my plan?
    550 minutes
    4 lines with 6PM NW, Pick 3
Line 1 -Blackberry plan, $5 credit
Line 2-1000 free txt, no data
    Line 3 - 500 txt for $1, no data
    Line 4 - $10 credit for line

I looked at my last bill. Came out to $86 after taxes.

  30. Hello,
My gf works for Sprint and I have my current phone plan because I'm on her "account" (I pay $20/month for 500min, unlimited data, etc). Will the Pre work with these account types? Also, I'm assuming that those lucky enough to have this plan and the Pre will work for this plan, we'll have to wait to get the phone, much like we had to wait to get the Instinct when it first came out?
    Thanks,
    T.

  31. InsideSprintNow-
I was wondering if you could help me like Gaber. I am also willing to spend a little more but can't afford to pay the $50 difference for the lowest family everything data. Here are my plan details. I have Power Pack Family 1000.

    2 Lines
    1000 mins $50.00 (highest we've gone is 740min, average is 550min)
    Unlimited Nights&Weekends-7pm
    Sprint Unlimited Data Pack $0.00
    Blackberry Personal Pack $30.00
    Picture Mail $5.00
    300 2-Way Text Messages $5.00
    TEP ($3 Ins. premium + ESRP) $14.00
    100 Roaming Minutes (Line 1)$0.00
    America Roaming Included (Line 2)$0.00
    Monthly Plan Cost $104.00
    Picture Mail Credit -$5.00
    NVP -10%

Monthly total: $88 After Taxes and fees.

I really like your blog thanks for all the help and info.

  32. ISN, thank you so much for answering these questions for everyone (and my earlier question).

Here's my situation: Wife and I share a family 700 plan for our Nextel phones.

I've had my ic5602 for 2 years and my wife just upgraded to a new phone in Dec, so now my contract end date is 6/2/09 and hers is 12/10/10.

Based on your excellent assessment on the main blog page, once the pre comes out I'd like to be able to transition to me having a pre with the 69.99 everything plna and her having the 39.99 plan that you mentioned.

Will I be able to make this adjustment even though her half of the family plan contract does not expire for a year and a half, but mine expires in early June?

    ReplyDelete
  33. ISN, I believe you were responding to Jawkneeman with your last post, if you have time to answer do you think i would be able to adjust my family plan once my contract expires in June?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Insidesprintnow -

So I am looking at the BE plans, and don't see where you can add a voice only line. Is this something that must be done over the phone?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Your contract is only that you'll have a plan on your phone, not any particular one :) so yep, you're all set to go. (and you can change plans at any time now, btw.)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Obviously you have a special plan setup with account services (for the discounted parts, at least). You are not going to be able to compare one to the other, as yours is a special plan that was setup for you because of whatever situation was happening at the time. I'll assume you have a Family Talk 550 min plan(the old powerpack 550 we renamed)/$59.99 - right?for which you would normally pay $59.99(incl 2 line) and $9.99/ea(lines 3+) - so the standard consumer price on this would be $79.97 before the addons, and $110.97 with the addons included.. You state: Line 1: $30 BB Pack-$5 Credit (=$25) / Line 2: none / Line 3: $1/500 txt / Line 4: -$10/credit. Which means you're paying $59.99(MRC)+$9.99(#3)+$9.99(#4)+$25(#1)+$1(#3)-$10(#4) = $95.97.. which means that if your bill was $86 after tax, then your BB Plan is also free, and that's $5 off the MRC... which makes it 70.97 pre tax, which sounds about right, othe than the possibility that you're paying for N/W 6pm option - which at this point I doubt.

In short, NO. You very well know that you are not going to be able to find a comparable plan with a specialized plan setup with discounts and freebies. You probably don't realize it, but you're getting $68 in free features every month, so I would not be complaining about having to pay to swap your plan - either you keep what you're getting now, or you make the choice to swap and pay like everyone else.

REALLY.. how do you expect to have 4 wireless phones with all these features and pay $86/month for it - I don't think you have any room to complain here :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. On the contrary, I do believe I have the right to complain. The reason I ended up with this plan was because I was FORCED to switch out of my original plan. Every month, Sprint took away a $5 credit, loyalty discount, $10 credit. Let's be realistic here, Sprint is losing customers left and right. Palm is struggling as well. Both companies are depending on the success of this phone to boost their sales for the year. I'd expect Sprint to try to distribute as many Palm Pres as they can. The more they sell, the more contracts they have locked up for the next 2 years.

Like many other customers on here, we have a "special" plan setup. We don't have the standard Sprint plans that were offered on the website. That is why we're on here asking if we can get the Pre and not have to switch plans.

Thanks for your help. You're blog has a lot of great information. Kudos.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I know the pre is going to be amazing. I really do.
But I'm on the old SERO 500 ($30/mo. for 500 mins with unlimited data/msg)

Frankly, however, I don't care HOW good the pre is, if Sprint won't let me keep my current plan, I'll never switch. I currently have an HTC Touch Pro (bought off ebay) and it's probably the next best phone on Sprint.

What are your thoughts on this? Is Sprint slowly trying to kill grandfathered SERO's by never letting them get a good phone again?

Does Sprint realize that no matter how good the pre is, lots of people won't EVER give up their SERO plan? (this could be thousands and thousands of missed sales, as many would willingly pay full retail price for the pre to keep their plan.)

If they do realize, isn't that short sighted? Sprint is financially in trouble. Is it really wise to do that? I can guarantee people won't be lining up for the pre the way they were for the iPhone. I promise! (it has nothing to do with which phone is better, but Apple is much better at generating hype!)

  40. I'm in the same boat. I hate that the lowest shared plan is for 1500 min. They should make a 500 (heck, even 700 min) option w/ Data. The other user on my account does not use texts or internet data. Why should I have to pay double what I currently pay so I can get a cool phone ala Instinct s30 or the Palm Pre. I have no problem giving Spring an additional $20 a month for a Vision plan and paying whatever I have to to purchase the phone. Once again, loyal customers get the shaft...

  42. Aloha,

I think phone companies are like airlines, you either hate them or like them. My wife and I have been AT&T customers for over 10 years for the reason that we travel overseas a lot. But now we don't travel anymore and since we hate them, we have looked at Sprint and their plans. I definitely like the plans and most people that I have spoken to, like the company and the service they are getting.

The only thing that really turns us off are the phones that are available. It seems like every company has a nice big touch screen device these days and yes, the Pre is coming out, but I think it is still too small. We would love a HTC Touch HD, HTC Touch Pro2, Toshiba TG01,02,03 or an iPhone sized phone. We don't care very much about the OS. We can deal with either of them. Is there anything coming out soon like that? We would like at least 3.5 inch touch screen!

Please let me know since this will be a big factor for us. We will decide on new phones the next two month. I'd like to switch, but there has to be something on the (sprint) verizon like that. The new iPhone 2009 is certainly not the worst phone. Please let me know!

  43. I know that there were no complaints about the electric bill increase. But, having electricity is a necessity not a luxury like a cell phone. The prices should be competitive and not inflated with all the additional fees.

  44. I have the $85 Free & Clear Plan - 2000 Anytime Shared Minutes with unlimited data. I have 3 phones on the plan. $10 for the third phone, $5 N/W and $5 pic mail. $105 per month is my base charges and my bill is usually $91 with the 25% NVP discount. So it looks like it will be $34 / month ($139 - $105) difference for me. Is there any equivalent plan or discounts I can get to help out my bill a little? It wouldn't be so bad if the jump wasn't from 1500 minutes to 3000 with the existing plans. It just hurts to lose minutes and have to pay significantly more per month. What do you recommend? Thanks for the great blog.

  45. Man, people are blogging about this everything plan requirement for the Palm Pre all over the web like wild fire. I have read numerous posts from people calling over to retentions/account services (the department that you get when you are serious about canceling) and several reps keep saying call back after the phone is released without being able to really say what is going to happen or be offered. I really hope its going to be a special data plan add on package for the palm pre. Here is my situation, in any case I will have to double or nearly triple my monthly bill for what little minutes/text/data I use or need every month for the Palm Pre under the current everything plan requirement:
    My current plan:
-Free & Clear Plan with 300 anytime minutes $21.50/month
    -Unlimited Text Messaging $0
    -Unlimited Power Vision Data $0
    -Mobile to Mobile $0
    -Pick 3 $0
    -Roaming Included $0
-Unlimited Nights and Weekends starting at 7:00pm $0
    -Total Equipment Protection $7/month
    -16% monthly corporate discount

    Total Bill after taxes/fees/TEP = approximately $30/month

My problem is with comparing the cost of Sprint's Everything Data 450 plan with the cheapest possible AT&T iPhone plan:

    Sprint Everything Data 450 plan:
-450 anytime minutes (NO ROLLOVER) $69.99/month
    -Unlimited Texting
    -Unlimited Data
-Unlimited other data stuff I do NOT need/want/use (Sprint TV, Nav, Radio, etc.)
-Unlimited nights and weekends starting at 7:00pm
    -Unlimited Mobile to Mobile
    -Includes Roaming

    AT&T cheapest iPhone plan:
    -450 Rollover minutes $39.99
-Unlimited nights starting at 9:00 (can be upgraded to 7:00 for and additional $8.99/month, does not matter for me with the rollover minutes included)
    -Unlimited Mobile to Mobile
    -Includes Roaming

    -Unlimited Data for iPhone $30

    -200 Text messages $5

Total bill = @$75/month for AT&T iPhone compared to @$70/month for an iPhone challenger phone meaning the Palm Pre on Sprint 450 Everything Data plan. Hmmm...5 bucks... so what, the iPhone has proven itself and is a 2nd generation device soon to have a third generation phone available. Which one seems like the smarter choice?

I do not need more than 200 text messages per month and the rollover minutes feature greatly makes up for nights starting at 9:00 instead of 7:00. So, I feel that I have a pretty good case to leave Sprint if I am going to be told to cough up at least $70/month for the Palm Pre. The only way I would stay is if I can keep my current plan and add a special data add on package for the Palm Pre for no more than $30/month. I really want to stay with Sprint and get a Palm Pre but Sprint you have got to add some flexibility for legacy plan holders like me. AT&T allows its customers to add a $30/month data package to any line on any AT&T calling plan for the iPhone, including customers with old legacy plans. Please listen to what your competition is doing for situations like mine because $5/month for a device that has not proven itself to the industry is not a good enough savings to keep me.

  46. We currently have a Free & Clear Family Plan with 6000 shared minutes and 8 phones.

If I wanted to switch out one of the 8 phones to a Pre, I'm being told I have to create a new line of service because the Pre cannot be added to the existing 8-phone plan.

    Is this correct?

  47. The point is, though, that sprint does offer the nessicary stuff for a palm pre with their $25 dollar add-on. I called and the rep said there's no difference between an everything messaging plan with the $25 data add-on. In fact, if you don't want TV and Navigation, you can just get the $15 a month add on. For me, I'm on a plan with 4 people total. The rest of the people on the plan could care less about data and wouldn't be willing to chip in for it all. To change our plan to the everything data 1500 shared plan would cost us $50 more a month. That's $600 more a year. It strikes me as ironic that sprint advertises the big savings over AT&T and Verizon of some $400 over two years, but wont recognize the big draw backs of not letting people on family plans add data to only one line when it is all they really need.
