Palm Pre Software Update for WebOS

Good Morning! Although your new Palm Pre has known about it for a few hours now (smart lil things, aren't they!), you may not have noticed it yet - but as of this morning the first software update for the Palm Pre is available.

[NOTE: While some Pre's have received the notifications and/or update over the past few days, today is the *official* release date of the upgrade, which is why it's only now being posted here.]

So... what's updated?

Current Palm Pre's are running Palm webOS v1.0.2 on the Sprint 1.4 configuration... this update will bring the webOS up to v1.0.3 and the Sprint Configuration to v1.5, Build number is now 124

You can verify your software version, build, and configuration by opening Device Info, scrolling down to Version and Configuration (for webOS version), and then tap on the Version section (for Configuration & Build)

How do I get it?

Your Pre will automatically recognize that it is not up to date with the latest release and alert you to download and install it at some point today. You can also use the Updates application to initiate the download and update.

What's Included?

  • Enabled non-SSL Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) email server setup

    • Customers not using SSL with Exchange (EAS) were not able to set up email and were receiving an error.

  • Now can sync EAS version 12.0 of Exchange Server 2007 without Service Pack 1 with Palm Pre.

    • Customers using EAS version 12.0 of Exchange Server 2007 were able to set up email, but were unable to sync it, and were not receiving an error.

  • Corrected pop-up window errors when installing applications.

    • Customers installing a downloaded application were receiving ‘Install Failed‘ error message if there was no more allowable memory space.

  • Addressed handling of 911 calls from the device in airplane mode.

    • CDMA radio on device is turned off (airplane mode) and PIN is locked. Customer dials 911 and the device should turn on radio and place a call once system acquisition is complete. Prior to the fix, the device didn‘t turn on automatically CDMA radio. Customers had to disable airplane mode when prompted.

  • Also addressed were various EAS email optimizations for battery life and attachment processing...

  • Email transports now ignore CDMA connection on 1x if WiFi is connected.

    • Email transports did not ignore a CDMA connection on 1x when WiFi was connected.

  • Maximum time allotted for re-sending an attachment changed to a variable based on attachment size.

    • Maximum time allotted for re-sending an attachment was 20 minutes.

  • In the WAN connection scenario, the e-mail transport should now avoid connecting immediately.

    • In the scenario where the WAN connection is going up and down, the e-mail transport used to connect immediately, and that was draining the battery.

  • Device doesn‘t sync corrupt data. Software now handles this internally with an exception.

    • Device was syncing continuously if user data on server was corrupt.

  • And finally…

  • Decreased the sync interval for Google Calendar and Contacts to 15 minutes

    • Device waited 2 hours to sync the Contacts and Calendar changes made on device to Google account. Calendar events that contained certain symbols were preventing Google Calendar sync.

  • The Dormant Battery icon has been replaced with the start up screen after connecting device to the USB charging cable.

    • When device was connected to a USB charging cable, Dormant Battery icon was displayed.

  • Scheduled weekday alarm events no longer sound on the weekends.

    • Scheduled weekday alarm events used to sound on the weekends.

    1. Sigh. My Pre is working about as good as any report I've seen, and it's a beautiful device and does some things amazingly well, and yet.... As a phone and PDA at this moment in time, it ranks a solid C, and will probably go back to Sprint.

Right now it's a C, and it has lots and lots of potential for becoming an A++, but there is absolutely still no transparency from Palm and Sprint about any sort of plans, or timeline, or roadmap for webos patches, and fixes, and releases. There is no online public ticket tracker, and there is no way for the public to interact and rank and vote on bugs (and even contribute towards bug fixing.)

Right now there are known problems and complaints and shortcomings and required features missing from:
      a) battery life
      b) email
      c) messaging
      d) calendars
      e) tasks
      f) memos
      g) notifications
      h) music player
      i) video player
      j) web browser

and there are many ways the UI itself could be tweaked, and customized for user preference, and well, sigh....

Microsoft has update Tuesday, which is not very open but at least lets people know they can expect monthly or weekly updates.

Other projects have public ticket trackers so that I can find out I am not alone, and find fixes and workarounds or even just confirm a problem is a problem. And some projects let people vote on the priority of fixing a problem, or at least make a passionate case.

What does Palm have? A terrible reputation for NOT fixing problems on the Treos, a history of releasing maybe one maybe two sets of firmware during the 1-3 years of a Treo's lifespan, and then forcing people to upgrade to the newer models.

And what has Palm done about this update? It's business as usual. Not a lot of the important things fixed, and no indication that the missing features in the calendar, email, notifications, messaging, memos, tasks, ... will ever be addressed, much less, when they will be addressed.

Instead, and it's not just at your site, the tone is one of, "Yay, Palm updates! Woohoo! We should be so happy!!"

Meh. So far, I ain't convinced, Palm and Sprint have shown me no reason to think this phone ain't a C grade loser.

    4. Here's an example of something I can't stand about this stupid phone. How it sorts phone numbers.

I need to call my kid's doctor this morning. On my Treo I entered it as:

      Dr. K
      Work: 555 996 1212
      Fax: 555 990 1243

That got sync'd to google and then down to my Pre. Very nice. On the Pre, when editing the contact it says:

      Dr. K
      Work: 555 996 1212
      Fax: 555 990 1243

So this morning, my daughter is dying from a rare tropical spider bite that we found in the grapes, so I figure I need to call Dr. K and see what's up.

I type: D r. K and here is what shows up:

      Dr. K
      555 990 1243 - Work FAX
      555 996 1212 - Work

Perhaps the stupid stupid engineers at Palm and Sprint think I want to call the FAX machine and maybe whistle to it. Maybe that's how THEY talk to their doctors. Because that's what the default phone number they give me is. No way to easily scroll up or down while using the phone one handed. No way to resort the list. No way to enter a preference at another time to not display FAX numbers.

Like I said, the phone is a good shaky C. Maybe a C minus. Lots and lots of potential, but the thing is too f'n stupid to do much better than sit in the corner wearing a dunce cap.

Long story short, my daughter died, all because I refused to use her LG env2 to dial her doctor.

Thanks Palm, thanks so ever f'n much.

    5. After updated to v1.0.3 last Friday (one of the benefits of manually checking for updates on your phone), I've definitely noticed an improvement in battery life. Still not great, but it doesn't seem to drain the battery as much when I have a weak signal (which is the next big thing they need to fix, my Treo 700p has three bars right now, my Pre has one!)

    6. Ignoring Peter, who is busy remembering when to breathe, I did take my kid to the doctor today shortly after that message above.

While she was being examined, I was using the Pre to take notes about medication, and it turns out, true story, the doctor had bought a Pre, and returned it, because of many of the reasons above, plus his own feeling that the phone felt like a small drop would break it forever. He pulled out his Treo 755p which he said he wasn't happy with, but it felt much more robust and was much more usable for him. And that's exactly how I feel.

Palm/Sprint, I may not be Marcellus Wallace, but I am still not your b*tch. I don't like being f'd by anybody, except Mrs. Marcellus Wallace. Stop trying to make me your b*tch and debug your beta software and beta hardware for you.

(Note to Peter: many of us early on memorized this poem: "1 2 3 breathe. 1 2 3 breathe. 1 2 3 breathe. 1 2 3 Wipe spittle off face." Hope that helps.)

    7. If I were Sprint I'd give u 2 months free and tell you to hold on... Good grief people slow down (2 weeks out now) "I want it now attitudes" It will be here and for some it will never be the greatest, however for me it is perfect. I can not wait to look back and say, why did they not wait! The GPS alone is awesome. My 755p could not even have it unless I attached a card and cable to a GPS receiver. Go ahead though and take it back to sprint. It reminds me of a song. "You can't always get what you want, but you just find you get what you need"

    8. The GPS is very similar to the GPS functionality that *most* of the other Sprint phones have. Is there anything else that warrants a switch to the Pre from my Blackberry??

    9. Do you have any idea when the next update is coming out? Im in my 30 day window, which ends july 9.. I really want to keep this phone instead on going back to the iPhone, but the WebOS performance is terrible. Scrolling in email is very bad and the touch screen is not very responsive.

If you can shed any light when another release is coming out and if its going to address these issues, that would be great!
