Boy Genuis not so smart ?

Rumors aren't the purpose of my blog, and as you can see there's none here from me. No rumored launch dates, no rumors of the pricing, none of that where the Pre is concerned. But when a generally well respected blog posts a rumor that is SO far-fetched without even a 'not likely' disclaimer, I feel I have to speak up, so that folks waiting for the Palm Pre aren't scared away - which hopefully most are smart enough to realize the insane figures being posted over at the Boy Genius Report (BGR).

So let's take the post as it was stated:
"according to our ninja, Best Buy will be getting its hands on a limited inventory of Pre handsets for a trial launch on June 7th. Sprint will be direct-shipping the lot to arrive on the 6th and in total, about 4,500 units will be spread throughout Best Buy Mobile locations across the country. That might not seem like a lot, well, because it isn’t, but each and every Best Buy Mobile will be getting at least one Pre to hawk."

Wow. I'm not sure where to even begin on this one - let's start by saying that any release this big certainly isn't going to be done with anyone 'partnered' in, other than Sprint and Palm. Sprint has thousands of stores across the country that are perfectly capable of launching  a device - where we not only can tightly control the inventory pre-launch, but where we can also make money on the accessory sales in-store on launch day. To even think that we would miss out on that opportunity and turn it over to a 'partner' is simply crazy. Does this person know how huge accessory sales are for a Sprint retail store? Also - Each BB Mobile guaranteed to have at least 1 device? C'mon - I don't care how bad I wanted the Pre, I would not get out of bed for that, because you KNOW that an employee of BB would have it purchased before the doors opened. Flunk.
"Speaking of hawking, our ninja has some numbers to report as well. Pricing is supposedly still being discussed but the probable points are as follows: New customers with a 2-year contract, $199.99. Existing customer upgrades, $299.99. Outright, $999.99. Yes, seriously."

Seriously? I don't think so. Flunk, again. $999 price point?  Put Simply, no. Not in any combination will you find the $999 price point to be valid, contract or not. As to the upgrades for existing customers? Have you -ever- seen a single price point for an upgrade price? The answer is no, because the system is simply not set up like this. The existing customer price will be the standard $75 off for 10+ months into agreement, $150 off for 22+ months, and the full $150 off + any rebates for those that qualify and have have the same device for 24+ months, which is essentially new customer pricing. Premier & White Glove customers also qualify for essentially new customer pricing at the 12 month mark, just as with any other device. To hint that there would be a single price point for any customer that wanted to upgrade is simply incorrect, and anyone as familiar with Sprint as BGR should be, knows that the system just isn't set up to allow for that.

ue

Here's how the Upgrade Eligibility works:

  • Customers are eligible for $150.00 after 22 months, 23 calendar months instead of 24 months, 25 calendar months.

  • Customer's eligibility date for the new program is based on Rebate Life on File.

  • However, once a customer takes advantage of a rebate under the new program, the new eligibility date is based on the last rebate received.

  • Customers rebate eligibility is not reset when they upgrade the phone unless they receive an equipment discount at the time of upgrade.

Other program qualifiers include:

  • Requires a 1-year or 2-year contract.

  • Account must be in good standing with no unpaid past due balance.

  • The Monthly Recurring Charge (MRC) on the primary line must be $34.99 or higher without add-ons.

  • Customers must keep the phone activated on the upgraded or activated line for at least 30 days in order to receive their Mail-In Rebate.

  • If you receive a request to flip-flop the new phone to a different line within 30 days of activation or upgrade, advise the customer that this action will result in loss of their Mail-In Rebate. If the customer wishes to continue with the flip-flop after this impact has been explained, proceed with the transaction

  • Upgrade fee of up to $18.00 in Care, Retail, Indirect and Telesales and $0.00 online.

  • Employees are eligible for mail-in rebates.

  • Customers are eligible to receive a mail-in rebate.

  • Mail-in follows the same eligibility requirements as Instant.

  • Intra-company upgrades are eligible for the New for You Program.

Customer's can receive the additional mail-in rebates overlays that exist outside the New for You Program.

  • A customer who is eligible for the $150.00 instant rebate is eligible for any additional mail-in rebate overlays.

Bad BGR for spreading such rumors that are obviouly not true, despite how many 'hits' it brings to your site. I only know this because I had no less than 50 messages this evening asking if I'd seen the post on your site. Me! And while everyone knows I'm not giving away the pricing or the date, I think they do realize that I'm not gonig to allow such silly rumors to be told without a word to the wiser. There's no need to scare away potential Pre owners with such crazy scenarios, when in reality Sprint would like to see a Pre in as many hands as possible. I've got more to say on the subject, but I wanted to get this posted to may dispell any harm that your post may do.

  5. Wow, this post is a great illustration of just how bush league this blog is. Read the post again... It's about a BEST BUY TRIAL LAUNCH, not the general launch of the handset. Not the availability of the handset from Sprint. Not the pricing of the handset from Sprint. Not Sprint's upgrade schemes. The handset will be out on Sprint before BBM gets it. Sprint pricing has NOTHING to do with BBM pricing.

It's about BEST BUY trial-launching the handset... Not Palm trial-launching the handset through Best Buy instead of Sprint stores. Idiot.

I'm glad you have a few friends that are sales reps in Sprint stores so you started a blog, but know your role.

  6. Nice comment El Bastardo!!!!!That just makes so much sense.

  7. Thank you for posting this! I was really about to get scared when I saw $999. I sure wish Palm/Sprint would release the pricing information, that would be a good gesture in the right direction for all of those people who are wanting a new device but don't know if they should wait (which they should) or get an iPhone (or other device).

  11. @ Matt -- since you posted it twice, I thought I would help you out.

When you want to use "you are" as a contraction you need to write "you're"............

  12. I have spell check, the misspelling was an intentional play on the very title of his blog. Guess it didn't go over as intended :)

  13. insidesprintnow, sorry to tell you this but you are very wrong. Best Buy list prices are routinely inflated and if you bothered to look at the history of Best Buy pricing for Sprint you would see you made numerous errors and in fact Boy Genius, which has a 100% track record with Best Buy, is not in fact wrong, disproven, or even made doubtful by your post.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Uh Fran? Get real. When you see a Palm Pre in a Best Buy with a price tag of $999.99, take a picture. Guarantee you won't. Also, if Best Buy does get their 1 PRE PER STORE, this blog is EXACTLY right in stating that someone from BB would already have purchased it before the store even opens to customers. And if employees are strictly monitored so that they don't purchase it, they will just tell one of their friends to come in first thing and "pretend" to buy it for themselves. Either way none of us will ever get to see it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes fran, but like it was said, its a BEST BUY TEST LAUNCH. so why would you even care, since most likely if your on this site you would have bought the phone directly from sprint already, and most likely the best buy employees that you keep saying would buy it for themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Rebate eligibility has changed to $39.99 MRC minimum

Also, if Boy Genius has access to Best Buy pricing, the $999.99 may not be far off... Best Buy inflates their unactivated, full retail price several hundred percent because they do not wish to sell the phone that way... no bounties! They don't care for that!

    ReplyDelete
  17. well if some best buy employee purchased the one pre that came through the store for a whoppin 1000 bucks, then he can have it. and i would like the privelage of laughing in his face for breaking his bank on a phone. this is rediculous 1000 dollars, i don't think so!

    ReplyDelete
  18. You guys should learn more about Sprint. Best buy is becoming their dominant sales partner. BestBuy lists Sprint handset prices astronomically because they don't want to sell them at list price. They make about $250 per contract from Srint and simply sell the phones at the discounted price Sprint agrees to allow them.

    ReplyDelete
  19. What?! I didn't know there was *any* MRC until this blog post. That's terrible! I have a $30 SERO plan and wanted to get a Pre for my birthday in July, since my contract expires in June. Even though I'll be completely out of contract, I won't be able to get any sort of special pricing?! That's a little ridiculous...

    $30/mo * 24mo = $720 before taxes/fees. Sprint doesn't want $720 in revenue enough to subsidize the hardware? Sad. :(

    ReplyDelete
  20. I just read in another one of ISN's posts that "if you want a Pre, you'll have to switch to the EPRP" -- is that to get the discount, or to use a Pre at all?

Can you buy a Pre for full retail (or on eBay) and then have your account switched over to it to keep SERO?

If I bought a Pre through eBay, went to a Sprint store and asked them to switch my account to the new phone, would they tell me no?

    ReplyDelete
  21. If you're on SERO, you'd have to move to one of the EPRP plans to be able to activate it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If you're out of contract, you could get new customer pricing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. EXACTLY.

Hello?!? Touch Pro was $700-some full price at Best buy, Treo pro 699 i believe. That's NOT the real full price if you went to a Sprint store! That's Best Buy deterring people from buying full price because they make their money off CONTRACTS. Its really not such a hard concept to understand, and Best buy has done this for a LONG time. 1 "debunking" attempt shot down.

Next, 3rd party retailers set their own pricing. This DOESN'T mean this is what Sprint direct will sell it for. If Best Buy wants price new contract pricing at $199 and renews at $299, I see NOTHING stopping them from doing so. 3rd party retailers DO NOT have to follow Sprint direct pricing. 2nd "debunking" attempt shot down.

Finally, to the 4500 units, there are many explanations for this. NO ONE ever claimed this is the product launch date. These may be demo models for the stores. It may be a soft launch for Best Buy first, again, not the first time something like this has happened. There are quite a few possibilities for the 4500 number.

Insidesprintnow, stating someone is wrong and "not so smart" makes you look ignorant when you have nothing to back up your assertion with other than "I say so." Considering there are PLENTY of Sprint employees online in forums, and none claim to know the "true" answer as you do, its quite interesting how you try to discredit another blog who has been providing good leaked info for years now. This is a VERY possible truth here, but you want to believe you're right, so be it. Slinging cells in a Sprint store doesn't make you any more qualified to judge a leak.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What I think what people seem to be missing is the fact that Sprint wants to take all the money up front. Which makes a BestBuy "TRIAL" launch dubious at best. Why would they (Sprint) share any revenue at first. I agree with insidesprintnow in that the Sprint stores are capable of getting a Pre in the hands of whoever wants it for the initial launch. Eventually BestBuy and other partners will sell the phone and Boy Genius can then speculate on what the pricing will be.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can't believe there is such a thing as a test launch. When the first customer buys the phone in any customary way, the phone is launched. Wouldn't you think? Or will they be selling it to only friends and relatives?

    Any phone launch experts here?

  30. Boy, who's not so smart now?

"ny release this big certainly isn’t going to be done with anyone ‘partnered’ in, other than Sprint and Palm."

Survery says: XXX. Radioshack, Walmart, AND Bestbuy will be getting it.

    Pricing $299 with $100 mail-in.

June 6th launch, date pretty much spot on

Maybe this website should be called InsideSprintNow not so smart? Dont be pompous if you dont have the correct info either

  31. InsideSprintNow= F A I L W H A L E

  32. Hmm. Well, I work at Best Buy and I know for a fact we'll be getting a few units for sale on launch day or the day after. I also hear Radio Shack is getting the Pre.

InsideSprintNow = EPIC FAIL. Guess what? Not all cities and areas have a corporate Sprint store, but some have Best Buy and Radio Shack locations. You think Sprint is going to miss out on selling to those markets?

    Hahahaha. You're an idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh and i just checked boy genius' website. Best Buy talked to them to confirm and it's even showing up on the Best Buy website. ISN = truly epic fail.

    ReplyDelete
  34. insidesprintnow, it looks like all of BGR's assertions have panned out true.

    1. Best Buy will be launching phone along with Sprint
    2. Phone will gone on sale for ~$999. Well it is actually $849.99 but it was pretty close.

The guys at BGR are not idiots you know. Maybe next time a little more humility will help.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Inside Sprint Now = FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL! I love how you just had to call them out. But you were wrong! Oh god this is so fail. And you didn't even have the decency to correct yourself. That's where blogging does NOT equal journalism.

Just another wordpress blog with a wordpress domain.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Actually, as a Sprint authorized retailer, Sprint pricing has everything to do with BBM pricing...the only exception is that they can subsidize the MIR's and just get it on the backend. There is no such thing as a "trial launch"...not in BB, not anywhere. You launch the phone, or you don't...simple.

Know your role, and stop being a BGR shill. Moron.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This really is all partially a semantics issue. Best Buy trial launch... could imply best buy trying it out, or Sprint/Palm was using Best Buy to do a test run. ISN picked the latter, and I'm guessing whoever's source BG was meant the former.

It still begs the question of WHY. I don't see the purpose of having 3-4 units at Best Buy. I, myself, am trying to get two (brother and I, moving a family plan). I wanted to do Best Buy because I'd get a huge rewardzone cashback and get the instant rebate. It's looking grim now though, and I'll have to try my damndest at a Sprint store.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I just think the author of this blog owns BGR an applogy.

The date in BGR's article was off by one day, just as you did. The reported full retail price was not accurate but is in the ball park of what is on BB's web site now.

BB always list full retail price, new customer price, and upgrade price. This is different from Sprint system but it is what you will see at BB.

BGR didn't say best buy's launch will be exclusive, the author of this blog made that assumption.

    In summary, BGR said:

    1. BB will lauch on the 7th - off by one day
    2. limited inventory - we can agree this is true
    3. New customer price will be $199 - proved
    4. Upgrade price will be $299 - don't know yet but it's common practice at BB that upgrade price is more expensive than new customer price
    5. Full retail price $999 - it is $849 on BB web site now

I would say BGR is pretty accurate.
