There’s been a new way of activating phones here at Sprint for a month or so now, and while you may occasionally run into a few agents who manually program phones out of habit, there’s simply no need for it anymore. Almost all the phones can now be programmed via Hands-Free or One Touch Activation, and the Palm Pre is no exception. The one exception to the Palm Pre is that it can’t be programmed manually, so Hands-Free activation is required.
Update: Coal has acquired & posted a full Palm Pre User Guide at SprintGurus here
To get started you need the ESN/MEID.
On the Palm Pre, this is found in 3 places:
- Underneath the battery in the phone on the right side of the barcode sticker. Turn off the phone and remove the battery to view. (not recommended)
- The Barcode sticker on the end of the original box, labeled MEID.
- The Activation Error Prompt:
All the steps and screenshots included, after the jump…
Hands Free Activation Steps:
If you’ve just taken your Pre out of the box, leave the phone OFF until advised by the agent (assuming you’re activating with care) until after they have completed activation in system. If you could not resist and have already powered on the device and selected the language, and activation in the billing system has not completed, you should either one of these screens:
Next the agent will complete activation in Ensemble and check the provisioning by querying the Switch Control Tables to make sure it was successful.
[For you agents reading this, from the Profile tab, click Page Options > Switch Activities > Query Switch Tables > click Get. Then review most recent transaction. Ensure Complete success displays. If not, see scenarios below:]
[Agents if you’re having trouble, ask the customer to turn on the phone if it is off, and check the device for EV indicator in the upper right corner by the Signal and Battery power.
[If the customer has already turned phone on, Tap Try Again or use the Gesture Area to swipe back or press the Orange + SYM + R keys and the phone will power cycle., then touch the appropriate language selection, confirm the Language Selection and the language will be set.]
By now, your device will have completed hands free activation, whether initially, or through the extra steps listed above, and you should see the screen below:
At the Terms and Conditions, tap Accept. You can read more by tapping the +(plus) sign and then the –(minus) sign.
Now comes the fun! You must create a Palm Profile.
What Is a Palm Profile? A Palm profile connects the Palm Pre to Palm to get automatic updates, back up data, and more. These features are in addition to the ones offered to you by Sprint. Setting up a Palm profile is different from setting up email on your phone. Tap Create New Profile. If you tap Tell Me More, tap Close then Create New Profile.
Enter your First and Last Name and tap Next.
You must setup a password and re-enter the same password and tap Next. NOTE: The password requirements are between 6 and 20 characters.
Now you must enter an email address to be able to access your validation email and tap Next. Palm will send an email to the email address used to validate their profile and provide access to the Palm Dash Board.
The device will connect and create the Palm Profile and tap Next.
NOTE: The device must have service to create the profile. This error can also occur if the you step out of Sprint Network Coverage before Profile Creation or Account Sign-In is complete.
NOTE: If any issues occur with creating the Palm Profile, tap the back button and try again.
Next you will be prompted for Location Services. Tap Next.
You have the option to allow Google’s location service to collect anonymous location information. You can read more by tapping the +(plus) sign and then the –(minus) sign. Tap Agree.
NOTE: You can remove the check mark from the Check box if you do not want to allow this collection of anonymous data.
You also have the option to Tap Enable Auto or Ask Each Time.
Finally, you will go through a Tutorial on basic gestures of the device. Tap Next and follow the onscreen instructions.
Once the tutorial is completed tap OK.
There is a video that will play and the device will reboot and the then you will be returned to the home screen.
Congrats! You can now use your Pre !
What if Hands-Free Activation fails?
[This is mainly for the agents that read the blog, but may be of interest to others, too, so I’m including it]
1. Reboot the phone. Either Press and hold the Power key while toggling the Ringer Switch back and forth 3xs (three times) or press the Orange + Sym + R keys:
2. This should be done IF the following occurs:
- EV Icon is not displayed during Activation
- Phone powered up to USB screen
- Stuck at Palm logo during boot
- Keys not responding in First Use
3. The Phone will reboot to the Palm Logo and perform hands free activation again.
4. In rare circumstances you may have to use the ##RTN# command only if the above does not work
- a. Unable to activate at first use after validating Provisioning was successful in Ensemble
- b. During First Use you will notice at the bottom a small handset cradle icon; tap on the handset.
5. Slide open the Keyboard, press and hold the Orange Key, type ## and the dial pad will be appear and you can release the Orange Key.
6. On the dial pad, tap 786# to complete RTN.
7. From the bottom, flick upward on the screen (to scroll down to find the very bottom “RESET” button on screen.
8. Tap on RESET and open the slider to input the MSL code using the keypads (no need to NUM LOCK)
9. Tap on OK. Do not interrupt the Reset. The device will show a slight pulsing of the Palm brand name.
10. Allow the device to full reset and perform hands free activation again.
Switch Query Tables Shows 'Being Processed or Complete Error' or Update Profile Unsuccessful - Manual Programming Steps
PLEASE REMEMBER: You can not manually program the Palm Pre manually. If there are any outages/slow downs with provisioning, set the correct expectation with the customer on resolution and when to try again.
So, there ya have it – whether you’re a customer or an agent, the above should prove useful, and will hopefully give you a glimpse into the activation of the Pre. Although it seems long, 99.9% of customers will only have to power on their phone and it will be done.
Remember you can always activate your phone online at sprint.com/activate too and avoid any waits for care.
do u kno if it will be possible to activate it on other plans than everything plan?
ReplyDeleteCheck ISN's previous posts - there is a chart detailing the plans available.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the rundown! I have a question related to activation. I am a Sprint Premier customer and noticed on my phone bill a page with details on the S|P program, and I noticed after it described being able to upgrade after 12 months instead of 22 it said: "Even better, you'll pay no upgrade fees."
ReplyDeleteIf I buy the Pre at Best Buy, will I be charged an upgrade fee? It'd sure be nice not to have to pay the extra $18, so I hope you can confirm or deny my assumption.
Thanks in advance. :)
Now you must enter an email address to be able to access your validation email and tap Next. Palm will send an email to the email address used to validate their profile and provide access to the Palm Dash Board.
ReplyDeleteDo you know the email address that palm will use? It'd be good to put this in the spam filter so that it's guaranteed to get through.
somewhat similar question to the one above... the palm profile is really just to connect the phone to palm for updates etc right? so it doesn't matter what i name i put in, but the email address has to be valid. is this correct?

ReplyDeleteI have a question... I can't take advantage of the $199 price, not till Nov 2009. I'm a Premier Customer. I don't want to pay $550 for the Pre... a friend of mine who (for some unknown godforsaken reason) LOVES her Rumor, is no longer under contract and due an upgrade from Sprint.
ReplyDeleteMy question is, would I have a problem if she goes to Sprint and buys the phone (but doesn't get it activated in the store) and then gives it to me? Could I simply activate it and not have a problem?
She has no desire to get a Pre right now - but will later in the year. I of course would be giving her the $199 to get the phone.
So should this "plan" work for me, or would Sprint somehow associate the new Pre under HER cell phone number?
Thanks

ReplyDeleteWhat about all the areas where EV isn't available? Will the activation not work on 1X?
ReplyDeleteYou can but the phone has to be on THAT line for activation atleast. You tell the sprint rep what you want done, hell do the upgrade on her account activate the phone on her account then when all all been paid and the upgrade goes through (immediately), he just does an ESN swap from one account to the other and reactivates the phone on your account and puts the old phone back on the other account. The only down side is you get no mail in rebate for doing it this way, therefore you will pay the 299 and not get the 100 back, is it worth it? I mean, I've done it so I guess so if you can't stand waiting.
ReplyDeleteit takes less step to launch a rocket into outer space
ReplyDeleteSo, do I understand I won't be able sync with Outlook on my laptop? If I can't get to my business calendar and mail and send secure mail with client info, what good is it? What did I miss? I'm not a techie, just a long time Palm user--and a long time Outlook user. Do I have to give up Outlook????
ReplyDeleteCan you clone ESNs from Treo 700wx into the Pre? Does it use IMEI or ESN?
ReplyDeleteCheck this out.
ReplyDeleteWent to my local Sprint store today to buy the Pre.
I was not allowed to purchase the Pre. This is because I had a telephone number with an area code from a different region. The employees told me that I would have to change my telephone number if I want to buy the Pre.
The store employees told me I could wait for a few days, and then perhaps they'd be able to sell it to me.
I'm ready to hand Sprint $300, and sign a two year agreement to spend $100 per month for the next 24 months. I'm not sure why my area code should stop me from giving Sprint my business. I've been a Sprint customer for over six years.
I have an update.
ReplyDeleteI called Sprint customer service and asked to purchase the Palm Pre. After I was (erroneously) told I could simply purchase the phone online, I was then told there's no way they can sell me the phone today.
To be clear, I went to the local Sprint store, and although they had the phone in stock, I was turned away. I then called Sprint customer service. I was again turned away. When I asked when Sprint will be willing to take my business, the customer service representative recommended I wait until next week.
However, the Sprint representative cautioned me that the situation might not change next week, and that it might be more than one month (or even longer) before I'm able to purchase the phone.
Obviously, I'm extremely unhappy. After this experience, I have decided to wait until the Palm Pre is available on another carrier. I understand that the Pre will be available on Verizon and other networks in January 2010.
Bought the last Pre at Sprint Store this morning. However, they couldn't activate the phone because it wouldn't go into EV. Tech support couldn't figure it out for them. All other phones were fine, so it's not a service area issue. Is EV an enableable option, locked somehow? Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Ok, so I purchased the Pre. Can some one please advise me on how to download a different RING TONE ALERT for my incoming text messages, and also, I cannot figure out how to use SPECIAL KEYS on the keyboard, i.e. smilie faces and symbols. PLEASE HELP!

Ok where's the video recording capability and why can't I forward a text message and whats is the problem with changing text message ringer?
ReplyDeleteAlso how about saving a video recieved in a text message and are you going to charge me for every bit of software this phone should of had out of the box? I am taking it back tomorrow . My old samsung was way better then this I don't want or need to wait for things even older phones have on them now.
don't you love the fact that once you have purchased this bad boy you get to find out the hard way that you DON'T have video recording capability on this phone??? What if I want to record somebody hitting my car and taking off??? Guess I'm just S.O.L. on that one! I get the feeling they'll do like the Iphone is doing and put out an upgrade later on next year that will allow for video recording...bastards!
ReplyDeleteIs there a way I can use a virtual keypad on this phone? I'm not used to a full QWERTY and like the virtual one better. Can't figure out how to do that exactly...I thought this phone would have both!
ReplyDeletehey Why i cant activate my plam treo hoysync it says that out of coverage please tell me i need to know it now!
ReplyDeleteWhy do I have to change my plan to use the Pre? I want to upgrade from the Centro, but Sprint says I need and "Everything Plan" even though I currently have a data plan that supports all the features of the Centro. Purchasing the "Everything Plan" costs $60 more a month for 700 less minutes! Why do I have to pay more for service when I just want a new phone? Sounds like Sprint just trying to make more on a valued customer.
ReplyDeleteI bought the Pre over the phone through a representative. I rec'd the phone overnight and called Sprint to activate it. After being on the phone with them for over an hour, they couldn't activate the phone b/c the EV indicator wouldn't appear on the screen. The Tech told me that something was wrong with the BRAND new phone straight out the box and now I have to take it to a Sprint store to have it replaced. Only the store are SOLD OUT of the Pre. What type of crap is that. I don't think this phone is all that is cracked up to be!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Therefore, I am writing to Daniel Hesse email: Daniel.Hesse@sprint.com.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI need the MSL for a Sprint Palm that I bought on ebay, PLEASE!
Thanks!
I agree. They are trying to make me do the same thing and saying all new data phones and the instinct requires an "everything plan". I know that bullshit because I had an instinct and Touch Diamond that worked fine with my existing data plan. I think they are trying to get as much money as they can. I know for a fact that our existing plans will work. They are just not willing to activate the phone without juicing out more money for a monthly plan.
ReplyDeleteGood idea, Im writing too. I don't think its fair to be kicked out of our entire rate plan with data just to activate a frigin phone!!
ReplyDeleteI'm having the same problem as other users. The EV symbol will not appear on my screen and I cannot activate the phone. Did anyone actually get this figured out??? I'm so frustrated right now, I've spent 5 hours today trying to figure it out and Sprint and Palm just blame each other.
ReplyDeleteMake your complaint here also: http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm
ReplyDeleteI have just purchased a used "Palm Pre". Sprint and Palm have designed the phone so that it can't e used unless activated. The OS is web centric but it has WIFI and should be operate without a Sprint connection. Sprint wants to charge a huge premium, about $70 a month though I already have a unlimited data plan and smart phone. The government is spending hundreds of millions on an Internet survey and it should be just as concerned about carries doing business in such a way as to limit consumers fair use/price of wireless connected devices. Sprint/Palm are now following AT&T/Apple's poor practices.
Additionally they are misleading their customers. They have made the following statements to me when I have talked to persons in both normal customer service and retention about adding the Palm Pre:
1. GPS is why the service is so different
2. The network is completely different
3. It is special
4. Our account system won't allow us to add the phone (This may actually be true but it is being purposefully design that way so they don't have to honor existing contracts)

ReplyDeleteThis is just CRAZY. On Friday I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with Sprint... trying to activate my Palm Pre. After spending all that time on the phone, they thought maybe it was the phone and sent me another phone. So, I've been on the phone for another 2 hrs tonight. 3 Sprint techs couldn't activate it so then they connected me to a Palm rep who said it wasn't the phone, but it was Sprint's activation service....... This is some BS!!!
