Whoops - I was off by one on the launch date, sorry folks - sometimes even I get the slip, ya know :) It was never my intention for my blog to be all about the Palm Pre, just my sometimes mundane life at sprint. But, hey - what can I do lol. We've been working in our own departments and in others the past few weeks, gearing up on all fronts - hence my lack of posts. Like I said though - ISN isn't about the Pre, it's about Sprint - and though I have blogged mostly about the Pre lately, well... quite frankly that's been the biggest thing going on, so it's only appropriate, right?
Ok.. ok... so I did mention goodness, right? If the blog stats are any indication then you've ALL been craving some new info... yea, i see ya hitting refresh every hour or two to see if I've posted. Get a feed reader, already - lol :) So who am I to disappoint.. here's some goodness I doubt you've been exposed to. Enjoy.
Oh.. and while you're here, in case you're new, check out some of my non-pre posts too, like: Overage Relief Minutes, where you can get 100 minutes for $5 (sure beats .40 cents a minute for overage, right?) oh yea..back to the palm pre, boys.... and you may already know this - quite frankly I've been so caught up in it all at work, I forget what's been figured out, and what hasn't.
How about some official accessories, price plans, and device info (including battery life)? Full size images after the jump!

ReplyDeleteSo let's se - $70 for the Touchstone and back gets you one location's worth of coolness. But if you want ANOTHER Touchstone you have to spring for $50 for the Touchstone and $35 from the charger! (based on that travel charger cost shown above).
ReplyDelete"Ouch Ouchouch", wtf? Why would you be buying a charger from Sprint and/or Palm anyways? *giggles* You DO know, any Micro USB charger works right? This isn't proprietary connections we're talking about here. Walmart and Target carry these chargers for $10-15 bucks, not to mention, your local flea-market, etc has them for less. Come on now buddy, I'm sure you know this..
ReplyDeleteTouchstone "...requires AC wall charger provided with the Pre, or additional AC wall charger sold separately"
ReplyDeleteYep, reads that way to me:
The touchstone requires use of the AC adapter provided with the Pre and so purchasing of the touchstone will not allow one to have two separate charging locations unless you purchase an additional AC adapter @ $35.
Ridiculous!

ReplyDeleteIs it true that the Pre won't have some sort of visual voicemail? If so, that is a big letdown. It's one of the few things that is great about the Instinct. I have gotten spoiled using VVM.
ReplyDelete[...] [...]
ReplyDeletePhoneFusion is already coming up with a VVM app.
ReplyDeleteDoes Sprint charge for forwarded voicemail calls? I think they charge a per minute fee for normal forwarded calls. If it is the same for forwarded calls, it will make third party VVM prohibitively expensive. If anything, Sprint should provide a free VVM app.

ReplyDeleteNM08SRT8, did you see the words up above in the top large image in the "Accessories" block?
ReplyDeleteDisregarding those words, however, time is money - having to shop around, order, then wait to receive a "cheaper" charger from elsewhere is not cost-effective compared to simply buying it where you get the Touchstone...and THAT'S $35.

ReplyDeleteIn typical Sprint fashion, they are botching the launch of this thing. Why are only some premiere customers able to purchase the device early? The stores have no idea what premiere status is and are keeping lists of interested customers to phone. Exec support says they have to sign up on the pre site (Which is worthless) to get any information. Company started to take a crap when some rocket scientist decided to buy nextel... and Dan wonders why Sprint is bleeding post paids like rats jumping off a ship.
ReplyDeleteYeah but if it requires you to forward calls or whatever through this system, Sprint charges for call forwarding, so this wouldn't be a good "free" option.
ReplyDeleteThey will have VVM, I can almost guarantee it. Just like the Flash player and Video capture capabilities, it will come in a later update to "activate" these options on the phone.

ReplyDeleteDude you were off by a day maybe but you pompously called out BGR who DID have CORRECT info and you look like a jackass now.
ReplyDeleteDont call people out when you obviously dont have the right info yourself and they turn out to have the right info.
At least have the balls as a man to admit you were wrong and publicly apologize for bashing BGR when the only "not so smart" person here was obviously you out of the 2 parties.
Third rate carrier + third rate handset maker = trouble!
ReplyDeleteAnalyst: Palm Pre Units Could Be Under 150K
Posted by Tiernan Ray
A little over a week before the introduction of Palm’s (PALM) “Pre” smartphone, Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar re-emphasized today that Palm and its Hong Kong-based manufacturer Foxconn International are having problems producing high volumes of the Pre.
Kumar had been quoted a few weeks back saying the companies were experiencing various hardware and software problems. Sprint (S), which will supply service to the phone, has acknowledged there will be limited supplies of the Pre when it goes on sale June 6, and Best Buy (BBY) has said it will have limited supplies in stock. Kumar says that after checking with a source of his at Foxconn, he believes the supply of units at the introduction will be below even a reduced estimate of 150,000 units.
You’ll recall that Apple sold 270,000 iPhones during the first two days the product was available in June, 2007.
“About two weeks ago, Foxconn was having problems with the flexible printed circuit board for the Pre and having trouble getting adequate yields for the capacitive touch-screen display,” Kumar told me by phone this afternoon.
“Now, it appears Foxconn has found more hardware problems, and it’s not clear if the problem is with Texas Instruments’s (TXN) OMAP application processor, or with some basic design issue.” Whatever the problem, Kumar says the difficulties are forcing Foxconn to have to check Pre units more or less by hand, one by one, instead of the automated testing that would be normal for a high-volume production run.
“This is a dynamic situation,” notes Kumar. “Thinks could change in a week or two,” for better or worse, he advises.
Kumar does not formally cover Palm, and Collins Stewart has no investment opinionon the stock. Kumar covers Qualcomm (QCOM), which makes the baseband for the device. He has a “Buy” rating on Qualcomm shares and a $45 price target, and he expects any shortfall in Pre sales will not have a meaningful drag on Qualcomm shares.
Where's the info about battery life that your blog post promised, e.g, "How about some official accessories, price plans, and device info (including battery life)?"
ReplyDeleteOops. Your promised info about battery info probably was, "5 hours of continuous talk time."
ReplyDeleteAny guesses how that compares to real-world battery life in other PDA phones?
Do you think in the future Sprint will allow others to get the Pre without the annoying plan change? I'm quite fond of my plan and want the pre, but not bad enough to switch.
ReplyDeleteYour ISP has doubled your monthly internet charges ... because you bought a new computer (which you have to buy from your ISP).
ReplyDeleteOnce we customers understand that we no longer buy cell phones, but that we buy computers that happen to have a radio attached -- we may not accept some of the nonsense perpetuated by US communications companies.
The Palm Pre' will not access data any faster than a previous phone and you will not be able to have more than one conversation at a time. Why changing a device that connects to the same communications pipe at the same speeds should "require" a new plan makes only PROFIT sense to Sprint.
While we have been able to pry loose the telephone numbers from the telecommunications companies with number mobility legislation, we have yet to come together to make cellular communications similar to internet access -- pay for the pipe usage but buy the computer and subscribe to the applications that work everywhere there is signal.
Maybe we will collectively open our eyes.
Yeah...I was excited that I could use any of the Micro USB cables and car chargers around...until I realized the the Palm Micro USB IS PROPRIETARY- i.e. industry standard will not fit.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of peeved at Palm for doing that. Yes, it is a "cheap" way to try to generate additional revenues (until the 3rd party market pops up), but it is also one unlikely to make many very happy.
I think Sprint should let this guy run the product launches, he atleast seems competent unlike the monkeys who do the launches. Between this launch and the recent BB Tour launch, Sprint is looking rather pathetic. Also, lose the Pre commercials with that spooky half naked chick. Show what the phone can do!
ReplyDeleteyou can always tell the quality of USB cables by looking at the thickness of the cable. thicker usb cables have higher quality -"-
