Palm Pre Plan Choices

Due to all the fuss about having to swap to a new plan (for some) in order to activate a Pre, here's a breakdown of the plans it can be activated on - both with the standard price AND the price with a NVP/Employer discount. As posted before, anyone can qualify for the credit union member NVP discount automatically, which is a 10% discount no questions asked - but you can of course qualify for much more, by having a different employer's discount - Not that I advocate being dishonest about your employer for discount purposes, but a LOT of companies do business with Sprint/Nextel, so many people are very surprised to know they already qualify for 15%, 20%, 25%, or 27% already.

Here's how the plan pricing looks, standard and with discounts. Yellow is the standard MRC (Monthly Recurring Charge) and then the NVP Discounts to the right, with 27% first, all the way to the 10% in the final column.

If i left anything out I'm sure someone will let me know, but this gives you a general quick-reference when looking at your options. enjoy!

  3. Why is it that the discount doesn't work on Simply Everything anyway? I know that'd be much more attractive to me at $73 a month.

You mentioned in a previous post's comments that I could do a voice only add a line to the Business Essentials + Messaging + Data plan. I don't see that here. Can you please help me understand whether this is true?

Again, I use all of the good stuff, my wife is a minutes-only person. No messaging, no data. I would like us to be able to share minutes though, to save on cost. Thanks!

  16. Cool. Somehow this was the first I had heard of my company's discount. My current plan is the ineligible Free and Clear 200 with unlimited data for $15 but when I get a Pre I will most likely just get the shared 1500 plan for my GF and I and apply our 15% discount.

I was lucky because I moved campuses at the University where I work and the email domain is slightly different. It didn't show up in their database when I tried to sign up at first but then I discovered that the old account was still active and I could use that to sign up successfully.

  22. In theory, there's no reason for this to not work. The way the system is setup there really isn't anything that would prevent it, as long as the Pre is on the Msg/Data plan, then any addon phone can be added to the pooling group for minutes as the voice only AAP. The 'master phone' plan would have to be the Msg/Data version, and the voice only as an add-on, though. Just couldn't do it the other way around.

  30. So I'm on F&F 200 plus 500SMS and unlimited data for $10 for a total of $39.00/mo. I've been waiting for the next great Palm phone since my last Samsung i500.

Obviously, I'm going to have to change plans for the Pre but really.. $30/mo. more for the 450/Everything plan? I don't care if it's cheaper than AT&T or any other provider, why would I agree to pay nearly $700 more to Sprint over two years for this particular phone? There's no way I cost the network that much, even with a hardware subsidy. And it's just insulting that I'm already paying for "unlimited" data but it's not "unlimited enough" for the Pre.

I realize this phone will use more network resources, and I'm willing to pay for that... but I DON'T USE my 200 minutes a month, so even the 450 plan is overkill. My price point is $50/mo, and I think that's reasonable. Unfortunately, the EPRP 400 plan is still $10 over that and since I'm an existing customer the terms (as posted on the website) say that I don't qualify to migrate -- new line of service only... and I have no need for two phones.

Is there anything that can be done? I'd love a Pre, and I'm sure Sprint would enjoy a bit more revenue from me, but I can't justify $70/mo. + taxes/fees when I've got all the service I currently need for $46/mo. INCLUDING taxes.

  32. I have a question, INS!

I currently am a Sprint Premier customer for having the Everything Data 450 plan for $69.99. I just found out that my company has a partnership with Sprint that entitles me to an Employee Discount. I contacted customer service and they told me the discount would be applied in 1-2 billing cycles. I just got to thinking, this discount is going to bring my monthly bill down below $69.99. Is this going to affect my S|P status? I really need it so that I can qualify for the upgrade price of the Palm Pre!

  35. I agree with Will.
sprint are losing money, and fast.
they screwed up with the instinct, thinking (ridiculously) that people would ditch AT+T and the iPhone for Sprint and the itstinks.
    not likely.

It's much more likely to happen now with the pre, but they should let old, valued customers keep their plans.
I can promise you this, I'm not doubling my plan (from $30 SERO, to $60+) for the pre.
Sprint obviously (as they did with the itstinks) think people will do and pay whatever it takes for the pre. That's the sort of arrogance Sprint cannot afford during this economy. They should play it safe (allowing the old SERO), and still make a huge profit

when will people realize that it doesn't matter how good a phone is, no SANE person would pay an extra $720 (plus price of phone) every 2 years just for the pre
it's robbery, it's ridiculous, and it's naive to think otherwise.

  36. Dear Sprint Insider,

Would the following work as a Palm Pre plan?:

Biz Ess 400 (MSG & DATA) + $25 (minus NVP discount) for second line to share voice minutes.

Thank you in advance for your response.

  37. A Sprint CSR has already e-mailed me that I can use the Pre with my F&F plan plus a data add-on. Are you saying that Sprint will refuse to accept what I've already been promised?

    ReplyDelete
  38. hey sprint insider. how about a reply to this specific question?
Does Sprint realize that they would sell a ton more devices if they allowed the old sero?
and that they could sell the phone full price to us. (even at $470 I'd buy it!)
Is sprint really expecting to get out of financial problems by majorly restricting it?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks for all the help. I love this site.

I currently have a family plan, F&F 550, with a total of 3 lines. My line has unlim text & unlim power vision. The other lines use voice only.

So, after talking with an online rep, they said I could theoretically swap out my text/ data plan for the Spint PRO data pack and it'll work with the Pre?

    That would be golden.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If Sprint will not allow me to use Pre with my existing SERO plan, then bye bye Pre, and maybe even bye bye Sprint.

I don't get that. Would Sprint rather lose a customer or gain money/loyalty for 2yrs? How does a Pre hardware make a difference with the plan? Usage will be the same.

  43. ISN-

We are getting closer! Anyway, I have had lots of different reps tell me lots of different things about eligible plans. Bottom line, I need to figure out if separating my wife's and my plan makes better sense than trying to do some sort of add-a-line. Just to clarify, is the voice-only add-a-line only available on the Business Essentials plan?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I can CONFIRM to you, that no plans will work with the pre EXCEPT the Everything Data, Everything Data Family, Simply Everything, and the Business Essentials w/ data.

That's it. There's no negotiating; that's how it is in the system, and until they make a company decision to change it, there cannot be any exceptions.

I spoke with someone from the corporate level today.

In addition, NO SERO PLANS will be compatible. The new, EPRP plans WITH DATA will work.

Basically, if you have an older plan, you HAVE to get a new one w/ data built it. Yes, it sucks, but that's the way it is, at least for now.

  48. Any idea on price/availability for advantage (currently on 500m unlimited txt/data ($20.00) + blackberry ($10) plan) This is an awesome phone and I would love to trade the 8330 in on it.

  49. I'm in the same boat. Pre will cost $$$.
I'll probably end up getting a Blackberry.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Like Will said, Sprint is about to piss a whole lot of customers off, and in my case, they already have. I just went to a Sprint store and inquired about the Pre pricing. First off, I am out of contract and I love it that way. I asked if I could get the phone ($299.99) minus the MIR ($199.99) and then apply my 2 year renewal credit ($49.99), but no...apparently you can't since the price of the phone is $299.99 INCLUDING the $150 off...that is ridiculous for a phone that is supposed to "save Sprint/Nextel // Palm"...idiots...but okay I guess if I REALLY had to, I could shell out $300 for this new phone...

Then they really pissed me off. This is my current plan:

    Power Pack Plan
    $50 Monthly Charge
    1000 Shared Anytime Minutes Included
    Unlimited Mobile to Mobile
    Nationwide Long Distance Included
Unlimited Night & Weekend Mins. Included
    Nights: M-Th 7PM-7AM Wknd: F 7PM-M 7AM
    Caller ID
    Call Waiting
    ========
    Plan add-ons for BRIAN
    Sprint Casual Data - Included
Sprint Unlimited Data Pack - Included
NIGHTS STARTING AT 6PM - Included
    Unlimited Nights&Weekends-7pm - Included
    Unlimited Text Messaging - Included

So what exactly am I missing here? How is my plan for just me, not "unlimited"?

As Will put it: "And it’s just insulting that I’m already paying for “unlimited” data but it’s not “unlimited enough” for the Pre"

So Sprint...congratulations...you just lost a Pre customer...and quite honestly, if you don't turn this around.... a Sprint customer...

    ReplyDelete
  51. No...this is one of the things that pisses me off. The way the CSR explained it to me (in person, this was in Arlington, TX at a Sprint store) the $150 is already deducted from the phone becuase you have to sign up for a 2 year contract to even GET the $299 price tag...way too much for a "Savior Phone"...AT&T is about to crush Sprint...and I thought Sprint knew what they were doing with this...lol

    ReplyDelete
  52. See...that's where Sprint is going to Hemorrage money to other competitors...no one is going to pay extra money (and a lot to boot) just to get this phone. If you have an older plan I implore you to ride this out until Sprint sucks it up and lets you use your existing plan with the Pre, this is not how loyal pre-existing customers should be dealt with.

  54. I know EXACTLY what you mean man. I have a F&F family plan as well with 800 shared minutes and unlimited texting on my line, and i was willing to pay to add unlimited data for the pre for an extra 10 or 15 dollars a month but it is ridiculous to have to get my own like for 70+ dollars or force everyone else in my family plan to cough up almost 100 more than what we are already paying for just for this phone. Sprint is really dropping the ball on this one and making the same mistake they made with the Instinct, except this phone is actually a good phone and would sell much more if only a data add on were required. Hopefully sprint retracts this and allows more flexibility soon

  57. There's clearly a gap in their plan line-up. It's this kind of myopia that just makes more disgruntled customers - and users who are quick to switch to the next best thing. Being price leader just isn't enough to win.

Fortunately for Sprint, the only other choice that people would jump for is iPhone at a cheaper price - which isn't going to happen any time soon. Once T-Mobile, Verizon or another carrier figures out how to close the gap for this segment, Sprint will start bleeding subscribers again -- they (Sprint and others) better hope that AT&T and Apple don't release a scaled down iPhone and a Data-lite plan - they'll end up taking away the rest of the subscribers who are too price sensitive to get an iPhone.

Makes me wonder if Sprint even has a strategy team at all...

  58. How much does this 2nd 'voice only' add-a-phone, cost per month with a Biz Essentials plan on the first (Palm Pre) phone??

    ReplyDelete
  59. "Due to all the fuss about having to swap to a new plan"

All the 'fuss'? You mean all the people who are pissed as hell. We've waited patiently for years for Sprint to finally come up with a phone worth a damn, we've salivated ever since seeing this phone at the CES, and now, here comes Sprint, screwing us till we're blue in the face. You'll get me to drop my SERO plan when you pry it from my cold dead fingers. I refuse to go back to a standard plan where Sprint sends out bills with random exorbitant amounts based on the size of a pool of entrails coming from a recently slaughtered chicken. (I'm guessing)

  60. We currently have a Free & Clear Family Plan with 6000 shared minutes and 8 phones. With the associated add-ons (unlimited data, text, etc.) we pay $520.50 before taxes.

If I wanted to switch out one of the 8 phones to a Pre, I’m being told I have to create a new line of service because the Pre cannot be added to the existing 8-phone plan.

    Is this correct?
