HTC Hero Programming / Activation Walkthrough

Since there’s a lot of both curious and tech-savvy readers here at ISN, below is a preview of what activation/programming will look like on the new HTC Hero (launch is 10/07/09)! Screenshots are directly from the device itself, and show the more technical side of programming/activation – which is generally a quick and easy process.

First-time Activation Programming Steps: Hands Free - OMA/DM

1. If the customer has not powered on the phone, request that they leave the phone Off until advised.

2. Check provisioning by searching the Switch Control Query Tables in CSM:

3. Turn on the phone by pressing and holding the Power button. The power button is located at bottom-right with the device facing you.

4. The device will begin setup.

6. Once completed the device will return to the Setting Tab. Press the Left Phone Key to make a test call.

Manual Programming Steps: To be used only if Switch Query Tables Shows Complete Error or when Launching the Web browser fails:

  • If Hands Free OMA/DM and One Touch were unsuccessful, have the customer perform the following manual programming steps on the phone:

  1. Look up the 6-digit Master Subsidy Lock (MSL) code in CSM.

    1. Open the Manual Programming screen in CSM.

    2. From the Profile tab, click Page Options.

    3. Click Manual Device Programming.

    4. Click Master Subsidy Lock tiny button to view MSL code.

  2. Press the Left Phone Key to bring up the Dial Pad. Press ## followed by the 6-digit Master Subsidy Lock (MSL) code, followed by an additional #.

    • Example: ##123456#.

      • The last # entered will not show on the display.

    • The Service Program screen will be displayed, highlighted on View.

    • Important Notes:

      • Handle the MSL with extreme caution.

      • When it must be shared with the customer, refer to it as a six-digit number instead of MSL.

  3. Hey can you answer if this will need a Everything plan? Oh and can you put something on the site so we can contact you outside of a blog posting? I actually wanted you to do a story awhile back and had no way to contact you that I could see. Thanks and keep up the good work

  4. Yep, an everything data plan will be required (which with the new Any Mobile, AnyTime - how can you go wrong, right ? So the Simply Everything, Everything Data 450/900, Everything DataShare 1500/3000, and the Business Advantage plan if you want minutes that are pooled and not shared (generally business customer). It's the same planset as the instinct, and also like it, the HTC Hero has visual voicemail, so data IS actually a necessity.

I'd love to hear from you! You can email me at inside.sprint.now@gmail.com if you'd like. I'll toss up a contact and info page too... I actually thought I had already done it, but it was not yet published... my bad, and I'm on it now. thanks for the comments.

  5. Thanks. The answer is appreciated. Not sure why Sprint hasn't just come out and said this. Another question if you wouldn't mind. The Pre and the Instinct were available to SERO users thru the EPRP, is that going to be the case with the Hero too? and if it is, how does that work thru Best Buy ? Here's my specific example. I am on the SERO plan now, and my contract is up the 1st of Oct. When I go to Best Buy on release day..What will happen? are they aware of SERO? are they able to upgrade to the EPRP if it is avail to SERO users? What is my best bet to get this phone same day it releases under those circumstances? Again thanks for the answer..

  6. 10/7 isn't the launch, 10/11 is. 10/8 is when we've got to have everything ready for launch afaik.

  7. Can you provide any specs about the OMA DM support? Such as:
    What version of DM?

Open Mobile Alliance (OMA): OMA DM 1.2,OMA DM 1.1.2,

    What other specs are supported?
    OMA DL 1.0?
    FUMO 1.0?
    SCOMO 1.0?
Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP):DM enabler 1.0?

Is the OMA DM support open, that is, can the device be supported with a third-party OMA compliant service or is it closed and only available to the Sprint internal OMA DM system?

I'm guessing that, as it is OMA DM, it's open but I wanted to get a definitive word if possible.
    Thanks,
    KWLandry

  9. Hi there,
I have a sprint blackberry and i am getting my Hero today. If I follow the steps, should I be able to use my new phone (hero) and have old phone deactivated?
Also, how can i find the MSL number, what is it? should i be using same MSL from the old phone to activate the new one? Don't I need to call CS to do this?
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Thank you,
