"Early Upgrade Buy Up" replaced by "Upgrade Now"

I've receive *almost* as many questions about this over the past week as I did about the EVO LTE - and I was finally able to get an answer :) Here's the new official policy, that eliminates the "early upgrade buy up" (aka contract buy out) and replaces it with a new program called "upgrade now"

To provide a better customer experience and align Account Services with the same price points as Retail, we’re replacing the “Early Upgrade Buy Up” offer strategy with a new program called “Upgrade Now”. There will be 2 tiers for Upgrade Now fees, based on whether it’s an advanced or non-advanced device:

Non-Advanced Devices

  • 09-11 mos. RLOF: $150 UPGRADENOW; CSM charge code: BUY150

  • 12-14 mos. RLOF: $125 UPGRADENOW; CSM charge code: BUY125

  • 15-17 mos. RLOF: $100 UPGRADENOW; CSM charge code: BUY100

  • 18-21 mos. RLOF: $50 UPGRADENOW; CSM charge code: BUY50


Advanced Devices

  • 09-11 mos. RLOF: $275 UPGRADENOW; CSM charge code: BUY275

  • 12-14 mos. RLOF: $225 UPGRADENOW; CSM charge code: BUY225

  • 15-17 mos. RLOF: $175 UPGRADENOW; CSM charge code: BUY175

  • 18-21 mos. RLOF: $100 UPGRADENOW; CSM charge code: BUY100


Offers will continue to be targeted in sView/i-Care (Campaign: XU UPGRADE NOW) based on rebate life on file and other qualifying criteria.

Agents must discuss the buyback program with customers.
Retail stores will require the customer to use the buyback program on their old device (exceptions may apply), which in turns gives the customer an instant credit.
Important note: Retail will not be going live until 6/18/12.
Prior to 6/18/12:

  • Account Services will handle the call business as usual the same way we’ve handled the buy up offer.

  • Offers will need to be dispositioned as Offer Accepted/Declined based on the outcome.


After 6/18/12:

  • Refer to nearest corporate owned store so the customer can take care of the entire upgrade process end-to-end without having to wait for their device to be delivered or their buyback credit to appear on the account.

  • Important: If customer chooses to visit a store, disposition as Offer/Declined. The store will disposition the Accept during the fulfillment process.


Notes for Account Services:

  • Familiarize yourself with the new tiers available based on device type.

  • Review Targeted Offers to determine if customer is eligible for this offer.

  • If customer is eligible:

  • Educate on what the Upgrade Now program is, how it works, and options for completing the Upgrade.

  • Position Buyback on every call (instant if going through retail or future bill credit if processed online).

  • If prior to 6/18/12, handle the call business as usual the same way we’ve handled the buy up offer.

  • After 6/18/12, discuss with customer benefits of visiting a store and provide an address to the nearest corporate store. If customer does not want to go to a store, then handle business as usual, the same way we’ve handled the buy up offer.

  • Disposition the offer:

  • If before 6/18, disposition business as usual based on the outcome of the call.

  • If after 6/18 and you refer to store to have offer fulfilled, disposition as Offer/Declined. The Store will click Accept during the fulfillment process.

  1. I'm sure its just a coincidence that the "better customer experience" increased the price of the upgrade for just about everyone. I paid $60 to upgrade 5 months early.

  3. What's the difference between advanced and non advanced? This year I was at 10 months on my contract with the EVO 3D, it cost me $165 to buy out... Would that be $150 instead next year?

  4. I assume non-advanced devices are featurephones/non-smartphones and all smartphones are advanced devices. So under the new policy upgrading an Evo 3D 10 months into the contract would be a $275 fee, if I'm reading the chart correctly.

  6. So wait, I bought the extra from BB that would guarantee me they would pay me half the value of the phone after a year if I exchanged it.

    My plan was that would cover the early upgrade fee so I could continue upgrading on a yearly cycle. (Like the good old days)

    Is it true that now I would be unable to do the instant upgrade, because I will be required to use Sprint's Buyback program at a corporate store rather than Best Buys?

    Maybe I'm misreading.

    One thing is clear, they have changed what was a $115 fee two weeks ago to a $275 fee.

    This is a huge money making business. 27 million phones sold in the US each year. Every area of pricing is going up and will continue until demands starts to drop off or level out.

  10. If you entered your current contract before 09/09/11 then any phone you have is non-advanced. That includes 3vo's bought before that date.

  11. They get my $225-285 every month - Not all that five grand is overhead, the new phone same class should be free after 2 years. lol
    But I have 4 phones all contracts are up and I can go where I please. Nobody has a better plan and I would still have to pay for phones.
    Just gota go with the flow until they all find out what real competition is . . .

  13. Still not a horrible program.. try getting VZ or AT&T to let you upgrade early and see what happens. Or, feel free to upgrade for free whenever you want, and pay the full retail price for the phone.

  14. I dont understand how this works... Is the months on the side, and the value of $ on the other side how long we are in a contract and what the value of a new phone price will be, or what our value of a trade in is, or what?

    I kinda prefer the buy out program, which Sprint implemented before I was eligible to try. Seems Sprint should offer people to buy out their contract at any time.

  15. This is like a stab in the back after telling all my friends how good sprint is in my area (not the rest of the country). Let's see now, no replaceable battery for the lte(I'm never near a charger), wimax 4g discontinued, never had wimax 4g within 50-75 miles from my house anyway(may as well be a thousand miles), they constantly told me it's on the way, and quad core S4 's on the horizon. I realize I'm better off staying put but suck it sprint! Way to annihilate the situation! They're on the way to becoming greedy as verizon and w/ a weak network to boot. Going to think long and hard about the future of prepaid.
