HTC EVO 4G LTE: Cleared by Customs

It would appear that customs has cleared the HTC EVO 4G LTE. According to the TaiPei Times:
"In a twist to the US’ import ban on various HTC Corp (宏達電) smartphones, the company yesterday said some of its products blocked by US customs because of patent-infringement concerns had been allowed to enter the US market after passing the customs’ review."

I have not seen anything internally yet as far as shipping dates, but I would expect to have that info either later tonight or super early in the morning. I do know there were several plans drafted based on when they would be cleared, so I'll get that info and match it up and see where we're at. Hang tight, it's going to be a fast paced next 24 hours! :) And who knew customs worked on the weekend for commercial stuff!

Thanks to about 200 people that sent me this article! I was out at brunch and having drinks with some friends on a lazy day, and had no expectations of anything breaking today :) At least now I've got some snooping to do.

  4. It's about time as to this day I have not received one word of info from Sprint themselves! I was told when I ordered I would receive my phone on or before May 18th and I have received no phone calls, emails or text messages about any delay. Sprint really blew this ordeal. I'm happy that there will finally be movement on my phone as they have had my money for almost two weeks now!

  8. I don't think we should get our hopes up as the article states some phones and does not directly implicate the Evo. Seeing as the Evo has not yet been sold in the US they may be detaining it longer. Also in the article , a person in the industry predicted that the phones could stay in customs for up to 3 weeks.

  9. i reveived an email from Sprint on the 17th about the delay with no new launch date as of the time of the email. Thanks to this site and several other forums i was already aware of the issues, but they did email me.
email from Sprint is as follows, simply copied and pasted

Thanks again for pre-ordering the new HTC EVO™ 4G LTE from Sprint.

The HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a U.S. Customs review. We appreciate your patience as HTC resolves the issue. Sprint will maintain the promise for the pre-order customers that they will be among the first to receive their HTC EVO 4G LTE phones. 10. I have read in several places they have been in customs already for a few weeks

    ReplyDelete
  11. He says he thought it could have taken three weeks, but that it didn't. He doesn't say a thing about it taking 3 MORE weeks. At least that's how I read it.

  12. YES! I'm elated if this proves true! Sprint's marketing & customer service teams can use this occurence as a case study for future reference! Communication (or lack there of) was the main problem...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Please be true cuz im ready to go off on somebody like a mf

    ReplyDelete
  14. Beside the Evo and One X, I don't think any other phones were held...
So Thank god it's coming. as long as it's cleared, the pre-orders will be shipped right away I hope. Looking forward to this phone so much!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sorry but I never got that email. I just checked my account again and no email. My account still shows a negative $211 balance and my order shows as processing. I ordered on day one (2012-05-07) and my order message still says, "Thank you for pre-ordering the EVO LTE. We will do our best to get it to you on or before the national launch. You can continue to check status of your order on www.sprint.com/myorder". The last email I have from them was from May 7th, the day I ordered, saying I purchased the phone. So to say again, YES Sprint has mishandled this from the very start. To me you getting an email over me makes me believe they are even worse at their jobs then I thought as I have friends who preordered and didn't get any messages as well.

  18. Read the article, they specifically mentioned that the One X and the Evo 4G LTE were the phones that were held up at Customs.

This article seems to have everything only been about those two phones. They also say the process went by faster than the expected 3 week time frame (which means, the process is done.)

Therefore, my hopes, up, they are.

  30. I'll be the eternal pessimist. Maybe just a realist. This is a Chinese newspaper report. China is still a Communist country with Government run media. It is all probably just a fabrication to appease the shareholders and steady markets on what is their Monday morning. Deep inside though, I cannot extinguish that little glimmer of hope!

    ReplyDelete
  31. If this is true hopefully they ship them tomorrow n we have them by Tuesday! :-)

  33. Well I can see this news coming from Taiwan before getting the news here. Bear in mind it's MONDAY there, so their business week has already begun. That being said before I get my hopes up too much I'm gonna have to hear it from an official source MUCH closer to home before I believe it completely.

  41. I preordered on the 9th and on the 16th or 17th my bill was automatically deducted from the $200-something I paid for my EVO. ?? What does this mean? Am I going to get an extra bill, or what the heck? Why wouldn't they just have deducted it from my bank account as usual? I've had automatic payments set up for years.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Same here... just make sure to pay the full amount of the original bill.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah my pre-order page says the same thing as Fifth... but I did at least receive the same email as acid... Sprint really did drop the PR ball on this one. All though that's the only thing they are at fault with at this point, in my opinion, it's still enough to warrant an upgrade fee credit.

    ReplyDelete
  49. haha... it'd be "sure we'll buy your drinks, just come forward and tell us who you are"

    ReplyDelete
  50. It will be interesting to see if that phone is included in this customs check or if it will have to go through it's own hassle. I don't really care but it might set a precedent for future HTC phones being imported.

    ReplyDelete
  51. We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious. They stole it from us!

    ReplyDelete
  52. This has definitely turned me into an Apple Hater

    ReplyDelete
  53. I dunno...there is something very "cagey" in HTC's press release. Given that they are well aware of the anticipation for the EVO LTE, why didn't they specifically state the name of the device(s) that have cleared customs? I wouldn't crack out the champagne just yet.

    ReplyDelete
  54. So it kind of sounds like they have to turn on, check, then re-package each individual phone? That's gonna take a while, no? How many units do you think are waiting?

    ReplyDelete
  55. If I remember correctly Neo mentioned there were packages of EVO LTEs that were already past customs and ready to be shipped. It's possible those already shipped, but then again, if they were already past customs, they would have been delivered by now anyway.. hmm

    ReplyDelete
  56. My shoe tastes really nasty. I just finished cutting the grass without picking up the dog poop first too. I am still skeptical. I don't have a tracking number and the customs people are in the UPS terminal at the end of the runway in Kentucky where are phones are waiting for distribution.

    ReplyDelete
  62. yea me too! I think sprint did fine. But i think Neo did OUTSTANDING! So pumped

    ReplyDelete
  63. Surely not, they just need to release each "model." They will be released en masse, not one-by-one.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Slight amendment...I'll also believe it when "Neo" clarifies HTC's press statement.

    ReplyDelete
  65. They ought not try too hard to find you, because you are probably responsible for more customer retention than anyone else at the company.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Why would they need to repackage each phone? They didn't check each phone lol....

    ReplyDelete
  67. I can't confirm the shipping dates yet. I will assume that person is going off the same info i have, which was a 'proposed' schedule that listed several possible release and ship schedules, based upon when the phone would be released from customs, but it wasn't anything that was yet set in stone. I'm at a slight disadvantage as it's Sunday and I don't have total access to everything I'd have if I were in the office, but what i do have access to, I haven't seen anything new yet on a confirmed ship date. My guess is it'll be drafted in the pipeline tonight or early morning hours, at which point I'll have access to it

    ReplyDelete
  68. The Droid Incredible 4G might be held up too

    ReplyDelete
  69. Thank you for the glimmer of hope!!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. when does tonights pipeline come out?

    ReplyDelete
  71. I have ordered a phone on Sunday from Sprint before i got it on Monday afternoon it there any way this might happen as our names are on the ups sitting there in KY oh and yes i did pre order the first 5 min on the 7th

    ReplyDelete
  72. it's not a actual 'document' per say, but the pipeline more refers to the flow of information/docs. I think you probably got the time reference from the 'friday/weekend' pipeline - and that's just because for anything that will go live during the weekend, we send it into the 'pipeline' on friday before we leave the office, with a future publish date.. hope that clears it up a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Thanks dude. Your awesome

  74. Glad I found this site a few days ago. I like many others are greatful for the information that we are able to obtain from here. Fingers crossed since my pre order was done though Sprint online within the first 2 minutes that there is a nice small brown eco friendly box with my name on it awaiting the first flight out. Although this whole ordeal has been somewhat of a let down, I do understand the complexitity of the situation and look forward to seeing Apple get a taste of its own medicine in the very near future.

    ReplyDelete
  79. The article was dated the 11th i take it they meant the initial Monday :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Umm no you didnt. UPS doesn't receive shipments or work on Sundays.

You, and everyone else, are assuming 'your' phones are anywhere near a distribution facility. Customs clearance is done in ports. These are entire shipping containers, packed for transport. Embargoed items are often trucked even farther away from their initial arrival point to be quarantined until inspection and release or return to country of origin.

I want mine to arrive as much as the next person but there's no reason at all to assume these are 'waiting' somewhere to be put on a brown truck to your house.

    ReplyDelete

  83. UPS's preload starts at 4am monday morning. And yes UPS starts its midnight shift at 10pm on sundays

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yes I too read this and I believe that its going to be soon. This is an awesome phone I know that the LTE is not in affect yet. When I brought the first EVO 4g the 4g was not usable until four months later but we got it and it became one of the best phone. Waiting for my new EVO with open arms.

    ReplyDelete
  85. As Fifth313ment and Adam mentioned, the list might now include the Amaze 4G (T-mobile), and see Droid Incredible 4G (Verizon) added soon. That would be the best explanation as they why HTC's statement used the word "some" instead of "both" or "one."

Now, according to this article: http://tw.news.yahoo.com/%E5%8F%88-%E6%AC%BE%E6%89%8B%E6%A9%9F%E5%8D%A1%E9%97%9C-%E5%AE%8F%E9%81%94%E9%9B%BB-%E6%94%BE%E8%A1%8C%E4%B8%AD-203217706.html

The fifth paragraph restates the "some products have passed inspection" part. Right after that, it says, "As for what phone models have been released? HTC points out that they are following up and checking, although the inspection results of each specific product is not yet known, the company is working closely in cooperation with U.S. Customs to expedite inspection."

It's rather strange that HTC wouldn't know which exact models have been cleared. One would hope that, since the One X and Evo 4G LTE were the first phones to be put on hold, they'd be cleared first, and that since they're essentially the same phone, especially from the software perspective, if one got cleared, so would the other.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Ok hate to burst the bubble believe me I'm like the rest of you but Slashgear has a post today about this and it seems to answer a question that I have been asking for a week now. The article says that some devices have cleared customs but did not specify which ones. What I have been asking is why the HTC ONE S has not had any issues getting to T-Mobile. Maybe because the ONE S has been the devices that they are talking about. You can't say as a company

"Each imported HTC model must be reviewed by Customs and will be released once Customs officials have completed the inspection. Some models have gone through inspection and been released to our carriers customers. We don’t have the status of each specific device model at this time, but we are working closely with Customs. We remain confident that this issue will be resolved soon"

How can you say in the same breath that you don't have the status of each device, but say you are working closely with customs? In fact HTC likely has someone onsite there reporting every bit of this drama. I think what happened and of course I'm speculating like everyone else is that HTC gambled that because they were able to get the ONE S to T-Mobile that they could get a free pass with the EVO LTE and the One X. It might also explain why some were reporting a June release date likely in anticipation of some issues they may have . Because The ONE S went and at least the initial shipments of the ONE X were allowed they were under the impression they could make the date. If we get shipping info today it would be great but I’m thinking we still may be waiting for a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  87. So, I saw this over the weekend and then expected to see a tracking number on my order when I checked this morning. Still not out there. what's the story? I was a very early pre-order.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Your assumption that "customs clearance is done in ports" is not accurate. Customs has to patrol the airports as well. Not everything overseas comes by way of ships.

    ReplyDelete
  89. They do deduct the amount from your method of payment. So check the account of how you paid. When you order from sprint online, they credit your account the amount of your purchase. When your new sprint bill isavailable, the charge for the device will be there so your bill will appear higher. Just pay your normal amount this month and next month as usual
