So, you want to cancel your pre-order of the HTC EVO 4G LTE?

This is a question that I've gotten a lot in the past couple of days - How can I cancel my pre-order? Normally, that would be a very easy answer, because in any other normal situation, you really couldn't 'cancel' a pre-order other than refusing shipment once it's arrived. But these are certainly not 'normal' times, are they? Never before in the many years that I've been here have we ever found ourselves in this situation. So for that reason, things have changed multiple times over the past few days regarding how cancellations are handled for this particular situation. And they could change again, but for the time being, you're witnessing a huge corporation do something that it rarely does - make changes based on customer need/response in near real-time (trust me when i say these changes would normally takes weeks or months to roll out). For you that's probably boring and not the point, but for some of us, it's history in the making. If nothing else, I hope we will have learned a few things from this ordeal as a company, and make some changes to both policies and communications. Maybe I'm dreaming. But anyways.. onto why you're here.

So... if you realllllly need to cancel your pre-order, you can now do so. But before you decide to do that, let me say that I fully expect this phone to be in our hands by next week. And I'm also waiting for my HTC EVO 4G LTE! So while I can make no promises, or give you any new info yet... If my mom asked me when she'd have her new EVO, I'd say next week.

But, if you can't wait, or have special circumstance, or are just really mad at the customs folks, there are ways to cancel your order. Here we go:

If you signed up for the DWL (Device Waiting List) at a Corporate Sprint Store:

  • Customers who pre-ordered the device at a company-owned Sprint Retail Store purchased one $50 Sprint gift card to add their name to DWL for each device they wished to purchase.

  • Customers can contact the store and request removal from the store’s DWL.

  • Remind customers the Sprint gift card was a required purchase to be on the DWL. They are non-refundable, can be used to buy any device or accessory, and can be used to credit their Sprint bill.

  • To recap, contact the store, they'll remove your name, and put the $50 towards your Sprint bill.

If you pre-ordered for Direct Ship (sprint.com):

  • Contact Order Support @ 866-789-8292 during the following business hours: Monday to Friday 8:00 am EST to 11:00 pm EST, and Saturday & Sunday 9:00 am EST to 9:00 pm EST.

  • Explain you wish to cancel your pre-order, and you'll be warm-transferred to the escalations/helpdesk to process the request.

    • Should there be more than a 4 minute hold time for the esc desk, the agent should get their supervisor to email the request to a back office team that will handle the request.

    • Advise customer the credit card refund request has been submitted to the Refunds Department.

    • Once approved, the customer receives either an email or voice mail alerting them of the refund and the expected timeline. If not approved, the customer receives a phone call from Sprint

There you have it. I'm hoping that Monday we get some good news and I get to tell you good things, but I don't have a magic 8-ball into customs. I can tell you that I'll likely have knowledge of it as SOON as it happens, so you will be among the first to know :)

  2. "...I fully expect this phone to be in our hands next week..." this makes me happy. The sooner in the week the better, hopefully before Wednesday.

  3. As much as I hate waiting I'll do it there's NOTHING else at Sprint I want and I'm not going to Verizon or AT&T

  4. I really want the phone, but I will return it when it arrives. The amount of money i save every month without the new contract will be substantial. Sprint has not set a date for LTE service in Colorado, and at this point, just the promise that it is coming in the future does not hold water. I won't make someone go out and retrieve it from the warehouse, and I will entertain incentives(Sprint is offering new customers $100 for an iPhone from another carrier with a new phone/agreement to add insult to injury) to make me want to keep it. There may be a whole new breed of phone by the time the LTE network is substantial in my area..

  5. Thx again for all you do. This has been a wild week, but I'm not jumping ship on the prospects of having my EVO soon. We're all disappointed and anxious, but we all need to hang in there. I purchased my OG EVO the day it came out, and I look forward to saying the same about the LTE. There's no other phone out there for me. Keep the updates coming! Have a great weekend!

  6. This was the email sent this evening to Amazon Pre-Orders:

    Hello,

We're contacting you about recent order (#########) for the HTC EVO LTE 4G. Due to an International Trade Commission order, all shipments of this device are being held by U.S. Customs. As a result, delivery of your order will be delayed.

We apologize for any disappointment or inconvenience this may have caused and we understand if you'd like to cancel your order.
If you'd like to purchase a substitute item, first cancel your current order by going to the URL below and click the "Cancel Order" button. You'll be able to place a new order after 36-hours have passed since your cancellation.

    https://wireless.amazon.com/vieworders

We hope to see you again soon.

    Sincerely,

    Customer Service
    AmazonWireless.com

An aside, when I spoke with them this afternoon the re-iterated that they hope to have the devices in our hands by 1st. half next week and they upgraded shipping without request to 1 day shipping if you talk to them on the phone. The second I indicated I did not want to cancel the agent proactively changed my shipping speed.

Reading into the email that the agent sent me after our phone conversation it sounds like Amazon did have some quantity and they did ship them out.
(That may be purely the standard wording sent in the emails though)

I'm sorry for the delay in your shipment. I checked the status and the current estimated delivery time frame is May 22, 2012. While we receive new inventory often, it's difficult to predict when a specific product will be available.

We won't have any more information until we receive more inventory. I've updated the shipping method on your order to One-Day Delivery; when the phone is available, we'll be able to ship it to you as fast as possible.

I hope this helps. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

    Best regards

  8. I'm hoping next week is the week, it's just sad at how sprint is handling this whole thing.... but honestly not by next friday... i'm canceling with my cc company if they act funny about using this way... it's not the fact of the delay more as it is to the way they are addressing things and the lack of communication...but I do thank you sir for doing this!

  9. I think those who cancel will be kicking themselves next week.

  10. Epic, as usual. And I stand by my earlier comment ... I don't understand why people are so ready to cancel their orders. As of now, we're ONE day into the delay of our phones. That could have happened even without customs issues.

I'm personally pleased to hear that Sprint is willing to cancel orders due to customer outcry and extenuating circumstances. Seeing as this thing has only just begun, it seems like they'd be well within their rights to tell people to just hold their horses for a few days...

As for me, I'm telling people ... To hold their horses for a few days.

BTW, any word on how AT&T is handling their ONEgate?

  11. That's actually a really good point. Apple would probably love to see people cancel their preorders and not get the HTC phone they wanted. After all, barring ill will towards Apple, you know some people will choose iPhones if they cant get the Evo 4g LTE.

  12. Cancel if you must, but DO NOT PURCHASE AN APPLE PRODUCT...buy another Android and let's keep this movement going. It's frustrating. Most of us are phone fanatics and it's hard when we keep getting our hopes up and then deal with disappointment. It's obviously not the end of the world, but we pay for something we expect to get it soon (or when they tell us we will). Another thank you to InsideSprintNow for easing this whole ordeal. It's a shame you can't be given a raise from Sprint because you've been more helpful than their entire corporation has.

  13. Do you know if there's a way to get the device day of release, if on a SWAC plan?

  14. Thanks, it's silly for me to even be wasting my time on this, (obviously Im not the only one) but I want my new toy, been waiting for this phone for 2 1/2 mos since my EVO went swimming so Ive been stuck with my old 8350i. Sprint should be thanking you and releasing this info thru this site. They could never officially list any of this info, but you have helped appease a small but hardcore base of their customers. One which they need imo.

    ReplyDelete
  15. thanks! I agree 100%, it's why i do what I do.

  16. Hmm, I really don't want to cancel, but I'm going to be out of town nearly all next week, can't have my phone left on a door step and get stolen. Once we have more of an idea when they might go out I wonder if an intercept to have it shipped to a ups or sprint store could be processed? I was going to set up that ups service, my choice, but since I just moved I can't set it up on my new address.

  17. I've been wondering, and haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, I'm one of those who ordered online & spent about $222. (with tax) My order receipt states "free shipping." With this in mind, when the time comes, how does UPS normally ship things like this? Overnight? Second day? Ground? I would guess if they want to get them to us before a full release, it would have to be sent quickly...wouldn't it???

    ReplyDelete
  18. as another option, they will hold it at the local UPS depot instead of putting it on the truck for delivery. Then you could pick it up at your convenience. I can confirm they do this in my area, so I would assume it wouldn't be any different at most other UPS locations.

  19. Got a second email from amazon asking me to approve the new shipping date. The new shipping date is Jul 2, 2012. This is crazy.

  20. lol, now they're just stretching it out. Retraction in 3...2.... :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I really hope so....lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am now listing the same........ July!!! I am going to call my Congressmans office to put a boot in Customs a$$.

    ReplyDelete
  23. ...sigh... Well, if I have to wait until July, I guess I will have to... I have been convinced for two years that only another EVO can beat my beloved OG EVO...so I will wait, but it WON'T be patiently... I am going to tweet and email and write nasty letters to customs, the press, anybody I can find every day lol.

    ReplyDelete
  24. No way July is accurate or official, is it? That would just about ensure that I go Galaxy 3 in June.

    This is getting ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If Galaxy 3 comes with a quad, I wouldn't get it. Reason.... I hear it doesn't play nice with lte. So before you could test since there is no lte right now... your 14 trial period would be over and you would be stuck with a phone with buggy issues. Everyone stock with you intelligent first choice.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Everyone "stick" with you intelligent first choice.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The exact same holds true for the EVOLTE. Your trial period will be over long before LTE is working and I actually have decent 4G wimax where I work and live. I will return mine upon arrival and wait to upgrade when LTE is going. My original EVO works just fine and I am suffering buyers remorse, mostly with Sprint keeping us in the dark. Now that we know how they play, I don't want to know what they are hiding about issues with their LTE network. I do not want to pay higher monthly rates with a new contract for service on a phone that would be the equivalent of having an exotic sports car and only being allowed to drive it on dirt roads.

  28. Going to cancel my order and trot on over to Costco to get a Galaxy Note instead. I just can't wait any longer. Anyone else consider the note? I am 6ft 8in so shouldn't look too ridiculous next to my giant dome.

  29. I think Sprint should band with HTC and SUE Apple. How come Apple had no problems with Tmobile bringinig in the HTC One S, and no problems with AT&T bringing in the HTC One X in earlier shipments, but now all of a sudden they claim their patents are being infringed, and probably slipped some bucks to Customs. Why do you say Apple would do this? Well we know the new iPhone 5 is on the horizon, most likely this year, and they new the HTC EVO 4g LTE phone will really halt sales of their iPhone 4S especially at Sprint. And if there were any truths to the rumors about Apple and Google eyeing Sprint, which I'm sure Apple would love to buy Sprint because Sprint is already rebuilding their whole nationwide network which will allow Sprint to most likely surpase T-mobile's network and AT&T's network, so drive down the Sprint stock, but Sprint at bankruptcy,. then it is all the more attractive for Apple to purchase Sprint. Remember greed and money is what drives people all through time, no ideals. I say SPRINT get some b*lls and SUE Apple for discrimination (again Apple let AT&T and Tmobile bring in their HTC One phones), and intent to manipulate the profits of a company for their own gain, that's to start.....

  30. I am advantage club, as my family work for Sprint. Usually we get the scraps for phones if there are any left overs after pre-order or public option. Sometimes they don't even release the phone to us for months after the public gets first pick. ( think Motorola Photon or Apple anything) Any clue when this one may be released to employees or their families? Thank you, interesting blog, great read!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I made a comment over in Sprint community that instead of involving HTC, perhaps the big cellular companies ie. Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and anybody else wanting to sell new HTC phones while also selling the iphone should set aside their competition just long enough to call Apple and tell them to back off.

Yeah, I know, it'll never happen...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dear Apple,
You Suck (emphasis on SUCK)!! Remember Karma is a b@#$%!
    Sincerely
Kiss my ... well you know that rest!

    ReplyDelete
  33. But there are no documented issues of dual core having issues with lte. The krait processor has also been proven to be as fast and in multiple areas of testing faster than quad. The only thing that might be better is the amoled screen, but it won't have as good features for the camera.

  34. I for one really hate the apple products I think they are really ugly the Ipad is so clumpsy, looks like a big square blub. What I feel is going on with all this nonsense of holding my evolte hostage is that apple knows that its one of the best phone out and they are running like a chicken without a head. I will not cancel my order because when it does become available there is no way of knowing, if I could get my hands on one I want this phone regardless of the waiting time. Apple has made it quite clear that it does not want it to be release why? because it makes their nasty Iphone outdated they don't make new phones they just add something and call it Iphone4 or 5 what a big laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think Sprint should be the one to sue, it was a "major" rollout for Sprint since the original EVO, and their whole new Network Vision is riding on new customers to their new LTE network. This delay could finally kill Sprint, it's barely hanging on now. Come on Dan Hesse, grow some b*lls! Where are the Sprint corporate lawyers???? Imagine Dan, your board will love you and respect you finally! Just some advice and my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If you have an inferior product and you want the (better) competition slowed down or stopped, what do you do? If you're Apple, you sue HTC on some frivolous infringement stuff and delay the release of their totally fabulous new phone. I don't care how long it takes, I will wait (though unhappily) for my HTC EVO 4G LTE! I WILL NOT BUY AN APPLE PHONE....at any cost. There...I'm through...
